which res between ss and cf sounds more deeper and growler?? I watched some videos on youtube. I can't notice between these two options. I'm getting 18" ss and HFC but will upgrade to CF one, if someone can explain cf one makes more deeper and growler sound.

thanks.

birdmanx1 05-20-2011 07:25 AM

Shawn, the cf will be louder than the ss by itself for sure . Since you are getting your setup with the HFC, the exhaust depth and growl should be pretty similar for either option imo.

I went with the 18" SS with the Berk cats. It is "very" deep, growly and loud (in an exotic way). You'll be satisfied whichever route you take my friend - hopefully that helps.

Hey Tony,

Just wanted to give you the news. After much delay, i just got my CF 18" exhaust on with the HFC's and its purely AWESOME!!!! Took it to a shop that primarily works on subaru's and mitsubishi's. They told me that this was one of the easiest exhaust systems to put on and the fitment was better than any they have worked with. The sound of it is great, its loud to me but perfect. I definitely dont think I would be able to do the 12", too loud for my taste. So thanks again for your help and information and now am purely addicted to the car!!! Fast Intentions rules!!!

Thank you for the feedback. I can tell you this, after about 100 miles the car will quiet down about 8-12%. In addition once the ECU cycles through once you will feel a big gain in performance if not already.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me directly...

Thank you, Tony

Grew up in Newtown. Used to love New Fairfield girls back in the day. I'll look and listed for your Nismo...Bet I can hear it from a few miles away with your FI exhaust!

:iagree: the combo of the Berk HFC + FI 18" SS is perfect and loud enough imo. It's loud when you push it and quiet when you leave it. You will definitely get the cops attention with this setup... Just today 3 cops trailed me for a while after a few spirited take offs :)

It is not as low as it looks! A 1" drop all the way around and you will be fine.

In addition his tips even though the are even they look low in relation to his bumper. He might of scarped them down which will bring the system down with it.

:iagree: when I first saw the exhaust post install, I thought I was screwed. Whoady4shoady, it is not as low as it looks which is kind of a cool dramatic effect. I drove through one of those sudden drainage drops by the side of the road in Manassas (Freakin' VA), I slightly scraped the bottom of the front bumper (nothing serious at all) the cans cleared without any issues. You'll do fine with the drop... DO IT DO IT

XwChriswX 05-23-2011 04:31 PM

I have a 1" drop all around and I can effectively say (knock on wood) I've never scraped the cans. The front end sadly yes, but never the cans. You'll have no problem with their height. As long as you don't take speed bumps with only 1 side like some people do to cheat, you won't have a problem.

Pelican170 05-26-2011 09:17 AM

Hey Tony or whoever,

Two questions, one has been answered a few times on this thread before but I cant find it, what is the "hissing" noise that i get when i am off the gas pedal? does it have to do with backpressure of some sort? just curious. Next question, having the HFC's and Exhaust, has anyone noticed an increase in oil temps? just curious because yesterday i was cruising around, not even really romping on it, and the oil temp was at about 240 steady in 80 degree weather... thats higher than normal from what ive seen with the car...

ProfessorDave 05-26-2011 09:50 AM

Hey Pelican,
While I don't have HFCs, my understanding is that the hiss is inevitable. I'll let someone more technically savvy explain it better.

In terms of the oil temp, I've been in the 220 range before. Limp mode kicks in at around 280 I think? I don't think 240 is anything to be concerned about, but again I'm not up on the details of the oil temp thing.

yea, the hiss isnt a problem, i actually think its kinda cool lol, just wondering what it is exactly. And the oil temps I was just curious about because i havent seen them that high until i put the bolt ons on... Thanks for the help though...

wstar 05-26-2011 10:42 AM

I've never fully understood the technical reason for the hiss, but all our cars seem to have it HFCs at least. It happens on decel at a certain RPM range. Personally I kind of like the sound, but I'm wondering if it will change or go away with LTHs. I'll find out soon :)

Re: oil temps, keep in mind the ambient temp is warming up everywhere as we enter summer, and this has a huge impact on your oil temps, it's likely the reason you're seeing a rise. I'd say as long as you're not regularly staying up past 240 (e.g. 260+) you don't really have anything to worry about. A good oil cooler is the solution if you're tracking the car, or driving it hard in hot climate. The exhaust setup isn't really going to change the oil temps situation much, except that maybe you're more prone to pushing the car harder now that you enjoy the exhaust note more.

I understand the fact that its getting warmer out, but last year even in the hot humid summer, it never got past 220 and now when i was driving mildly on the highway, it was sitting at 240... thats strange and never happened until i got the bolt on's on...

Ron 05-26-2011 12:13 PM

What other bolt ons do you have besides CBE and HFCs? It could be you're running a bit lean.

thats it besides the HPS tubes and AFE dry flow filters... I dont see them causing it to lean out. Im just going to keep an eye on it. If it starts hitting the 260 mark, ill probably spring for the oil cooler...

First point - The hiss comes from having an X-Pipe. Has nothing to do with Stock cats or HFCs or test pipes. If I recall correctly it is from the equalization of backpressure between the two sides of the system... Tony will have to come in and 100% answer that one. But the only way to defeat the hiss is to have either a complete dual system or have an H pipe as with the Nismo exhaust.

Second Point - The overheating issue... When you installed your CBE/HFCs, did YOU do it or did you take it to a shop and have them do it? In either instance, did you get it tuned afterwards? If no tune did you at least pull off the negative battery terminal for a few minutes to reset your ECU? Adding these breathing mods allows your engine to flow more air = more power. However comma if you haven't reset your ECU to adapt to this, it might still be running the same cooling maps as it would for stock. Which now that you're getting more power your block is heating up faster and the ECU isn't compensating for this. If you haven't done the battery reset, I would suggest to try that, remove the NEGATIVE terminal for about 5 minutes. Then return it and crank. Let it sit and idle for about 10-15 minutes. Then take it around the block a few times without getting on it. And let your ECU learn how your engine reacts with the new mods. Maybe this will help it adapt better and keeps your temps back down where they were. Or it could just be due to the weather getting warmer/more humid...

I've never fully understood the technical reason for the hiss, but all our cars seem to have it HFCs at least. It happens on decel at a certain RPM range. Personally I kind of like the sound, but I'm wondering if it will change or go away with LTHs. I'll find out soon :)

LTH's will not effect the sound at all. It's still there loud and proud.

Are there any other advantages of having a true dual exhaust over something like the FI? Does it make more power?

I don't believe there have been back to back dyno's to show whether or not it does. For an N/A car it's a bit excessive to have a full dual. If you are F.I. then I think it does benefit if you have a TT setup to run true dual 3" tubes...

Hey thanks for you information. I did bring it to a shop to have it installed and I did not get a tune. I was under the impression that with just bolt on applications, you wouldnt have to worry about the ECU and that it would adjust itself with some miles. If i dont see a change in the temp after driving it a bit more, I will do as you have suggested and remove the negative battery terminal as instructed. Thanks again for you advice...

Hmmm I know of someone that has HFCs with a Y-Pipe and the hiss there.

A tune isn't completely necessary unless you do full bolt-ons, but it's still good practice to do the battery reset anytime you change any performance mod. The ECU would eventually adapt to the new things over a given amount of time, but instead of the adaptation we want it to have, it would think something is wrong and cut back power. This way you're starting fresh and it takes what it's reading from the engine as 'normal'.

Do they have the stock exhaust still?

Aftermarket Y-Pipe and HFCs, the rest is stock.

After the Y-Pipe the stock exhaust splits back into two pipes then goes into the muffler, which I believe is perforated to allow the banks to balance out again.

Ron 05-26-2011 02:29 PM

Yep, but if he has hiss with this setup, then hiss is not caused solely by an X-Pipe. I think its the HFCs.

You do realize it's still technically an X even if you install a Y-pipe...??

Is there hiss on a completely stock exhaust on a non-nismo Z?

Believe so, but it's muffled enough you can't tell. I could hear it when decelerating from high rpms, but now it's much more pronounced with the straight through exhaust.

Ron 05-26-2011 03:25 PM

So I guess we can agree that hiss is caused by the extended X-Pipe design on non-Nismo Zs but incremented by the addition of HFCs since they are less restrictive. Less restricion = less muffled sound = more hiss. Same goes for TPs. Yes? No?
