Thats a good question because I would think straight through ones would be better flowing than ones with bends... Perhaps it has something to do with sound too...

You can gain a little bit of back pressure with a couple more bends and perhaps tune the sound a little bit more. But I'd guess the main reason the exhaust comes from the factory the way it does is just a space/clearance issue. Tucking the rear mufflers up under the car side-by-side is going to give you a little more ground clearance and probably make it a little easier to get under the car and work on it.

I'm thinking those straight out pipes would end up reducing the ground clearance a little bit in the rear and could get caught or snagged on something.

My first Mustang had side pipes and they ended up reducing ground clearance by about 2 inches. Every now and then I'd scrape the lowest point of the side pipes on the ground. One day my dad took the car out and the right side pipe got snagged and twisted completely over and off.

For N/A application, especially a V-configuration, dual exhaust is ideal.for boost, a catless downpipe to a straight exhaust for better flow is ideal.

so would not having a straight thru exhaust setup with no bends and no mufflers (resonators only) be more or less beneficial?

i ask because thats the route i went with my mach1, i went with slp loudmouths catback and love the sound.
