I would check to make sure that you have the o2 sensors tight and securely plugged in before stuffin steel wool in there. If every thing is tight then you can try that.
I remember a few posts about CEL problems that were due to loose sensors.
The HFC have a spacer that is supposed to keep the sensor out of the gas flow to prevent CEL's. I have had them on my car for 3000 miles with no issues so far.

Oh, and Autozone told me that they are not allowed to clear the codes. My Saturn was acting up and I asked them to clear it and they couldn't. But you never know.
