What kind of cr would you be looking for?

phunk 07-03-2013 05:43 PM

Apologies, I only mentioned that critical bit in the subject, but not the post! I will edit now!

Chuck33079 07-03-2013 06:01 PM

I'm in for a price. I'd want all the coatings and other bells and whistles.

SS_Firehawk 07-03-2013 06:33 PM

If I had money to build my motor sooner, I'd be all over it. It's being molested by GTM :(

Chuck33079 07-03-2013 06:36 PM

If the price was right, I'd buy them and mothball them until I built the motor later.

phunk 07-03-2013 06:47 PM

Yes a motor build is easier to chew when taking small steps. After the pistons, I plan to setup rods. From there, the last couple tidbits such as the headstuds etc will come. By that stage, I will have my spare engine on a stand and I will be seeing if I need to machine any custom parts for it, or if it looks good to go and ready for the machine shop. My goal is 800rwhp personally.... but with room to go as you never know what the future holds.

GaleForce 07-03-2013 06:56 PM

I'm interested.

MavRick 07-03-2013 07:23 PM

admittedly...ive only been in the 370Z realm for a couple of months...but, doesnt the VVEL restrict the amount of boost you can run? lowering compression means more boost. has anyone been able to run more than 10-11 psi on this engine?

again...sorry for the n00b question. but im planning on going FI, soon. and these are the questions i have...

phunk 07-03-2013 07:46 PM

Nobody can run more than 10-11 psi because you run great risk of piston or rod failure due to too much horsepower. Once there are more samples of people building their engines and turning up the boost, then we will start to see if VVEL presents any issues that need resolution.

The pistons this thread is about are targeted at not lowering the compression as much as the currently available options. Available shelf pistons are 9:1, where stock is 11:1. I wish to go right in the middle, at 10:1.

phunk 07-03-2013 08:12 PM

Price Point, at 7 sets:

CP Pistons, 10:1 C/R, 0.5mm over, HD, HD pins, including rings, $775.

Optional coatings can cost up to $150.

+ shipping.

Chuck33079 07-03-2013 08:54 PM

That's a damn good deal.

SS_Firehawk 07-03-2013 09:28 PM

Noob questions incoming... What do the coatings do?

JMac88 07-03-2013 09:30 PM

I am in

I honestly haven't looked into it. I will get you details. I am assuming they offer a skirt coating to reduce friction and maybe a ceramic coating on the top to reduce heat absorption.. At least that's the typical stuff I see on pistons... But in the really brief conversation I didn't ask for details on that.. I was cutting to the chase and going for the numbers so I could check interest

That's the way I understand it as well.

phunk 07-10-2013 02:06 PM

BUMP!

OK so we need 7 guys who are 100%. If we get to 7 people, I can place the order and they can start building the pistons. I will put my name on the list first:

1: phunk

tibal 07-25-2013 02:28 PM

This is very interesting and I think after I look into it I would be interested. I want to begin to collect the parts for a decent (stable) build, and this would be a great starting point.

I love the sound of 10:1 rather than the 9:1. So there are currently no 10:1 "shelf" that are made for our platform?

Great thinking and greater price!

phunk 07-25-2013 02:50 PM

correct, there are no shelf pistons in 10:1... even if there were others, i would opt for the CP with a price like that.

unfortunately there is little to no interest for this, so the pricing would quite be a bit higher since it looks like there is no way we will find 7 people at once.

Chuck33079 07-25-2013 03:42 PM

I'd be in, but that would bring the count so far to two. That doesn't even get us a set of free stickers, much less a discount.

phunk 07-25-2013 04:05 PM

Well.. I suppose we can just keep a list going and see if we make it to 7! Maybe they would give it to me at 6.

I think in six months this list will be well into the double digits. We've got a lot of soon-to-be MHI kit owners, and some portion of them are either going cheap on supporting mods or don't have the self control not to play with the knob on the boost controller.

Chances are those people will have to abandon/sell the car because they won't have the funds for repairs.

Chuck33079 07-25-2013 05:43 PM

Then I'll be able to pick up a spare block to build up for pocket change since its blown. It's a win win.

That's exactly what I was thinking

yes, those are the most common. I got factory trained on applying the stuff a few years back because a local corvette shop was wanting it done, but I don't like dealing with hazmat. I do have the coatings in my fridge still though, but I won't apply them for customers.

the point is, you do a dry lube on the skirts and a thermal barrier on the top.

Block wont be any good if a hole is blown threw it :icon18:

Seriously more people should jump on this I have 10:1 in my built motor. I am tempted to get on this list for my spare long block I have sitting in my garage.

GaleForce 08-21-2013 06:52 AM

Add my name to the list.

4 more to go and we have pistons being made! When I posted this thread, I had also just ordered a set of custom pistons for a buddies car. His pistons came in last week!

Chuck33079 08-21-2013 12:42 PM

At this rate we'll have enough for the group by sometime in October. :rofl2:

tibal 10-23-2013 10:02 AM

Add ME!! Its October and I think time to start some part hoarding for the winter.

3 more sets would lock in the deep pricing! But I can see what I can do if we dont get that far. I am sure I can still get us a decent break... but to hit those 7 sets would be amazing... that would be shelf piston pricing for custom CPs!

yup! any VHR engine to date will use the same piston

Boosted Performance 11-13-2013 02:00 PM

This is the absolute best piston on the market. If you have a CP piston in one hand, and any other piston out there in the other hand, you will see/feel the difference. The piston ring lands with the CP's are superior to all others.

phunk 11-14-2013 12:25 PM

In a couple weeks here I am going to start pushing this piston! I am going to need to get a set on order for my engine soon.
