Sounds like a plan. Since the upper pan is already tapped, leaving it alone just makes the install easier. How does it affect access to the oil filter with your oil cooler's sandwich plate? It's a tight fit in there already.

Changing the oil filter is not difficult. This has been thought of and tested. Sure, it makes things a little tighter space wise, but it is a small compromise compared to the benefit of adding an additional 3 quarts of oil to the oil system capacity. As for being messy, it's not really any messier than normal. You just need to use some brake cleaner and a rag to wipe up any residue. Same thing you do when you do a regular oil change.
