Rear Mounted Turbo (scratch build)

So i am putting together my own rear mounted sigle turbo. Using a garrett gt3582r , tial 38mm waste gate (.6 bar), hks bov, air to water intercooler, 600cc injectors. I have done this on previous cars, so i am not new to the game. I will slowly be putting up photos of the parts as they come in. The parts on order now is the waste gate, bov, scavenge pump. Possibly ordering the turbo tomorrow, pending on price. I will be running 12psi later with meth injection, after i have it up and running and tuned.

Way to be the guinea pig! Good Luck, I hope it goes well!

Big J 08-24-2010 02:13 PM

I can't wait to see this! I considered it but I can't do with the car down for a long period of time.

WarmAndSCSI 08-24-2010 02:16 PM

I can't wait to see this go from inception to a final product. It's gonna be awesome.

I would advise against using methanol injection to achieve more power unless your intake plenum is perfectly balanced. Too much risk in uneven methanol distribution, especially with 6 cylinder to distribute to. Direct port methanol injection, however... hmmm

fullmonty 08-24-2010 04:45 PM

Good luck with it man!!

DIGItonium 08-24-2010 05:39 PM

Nice! Hey, I know someone from the UK who has a couple of blown VR38 engines. I offered to buy one of the intake collectors. He said "name your price," so I had it shipped to Chris@FsP. Perhaps you can get some parts off the motor like fuel injectors, etc.

This is definitely the way to go if you're gonna do it

Coolingmist makes a really nice direct port kit with a progressive controller.

I'm just curious to see when boost starts to build...

Aren't rear mounted turbo's known for having huge lag? Sounds like fun though.

DIGItonium 08-24-2010 11:23 PM

Yes.

If significant boost comes on before 4.5 K I will be impressed...

i put an sts kit on my buddies 350z and while adjusting his boost control we could make over 10psi by 4500. as soon as you hit 4000 there was good boost. besides the gearing and redline on these cars means that spool at 4000 will let you let you hold boost for a 1/4 mile run due to the gearing and high redline.

Jordo! 08-25-2010 05:04 AM

Eh, derisive responses and gainsaying accepted -- I hope it works out and turns out to be a good option to consider.

I generally see these set ups making very uneven power, and therefore being preferable for drag racing over daily driving, but I've been wrong before...

jnaut 08-25-2010 07:11 AM

on that other setup i reached full boost @3800 rpm (12psi).which the motor was smaller, i am torn between selling my gears or going back stock. With my 8k shift point and stock gears... man are they going to be long....i was kinda thinking to help off-set the boost response it would be a good idea to keep the agressive gearing, but traction will be an issue when boost comes in.

vipor 08-25-2010 08:16 AM

My buddy had a rear mount on his 3.8 camaro. Not too shitty. Ended up scrapping it for a built LS1

Mr&Mrs 08-25-2010 11:21 AM

I seen a Porsche once with rear mounted turbo. It was awesome....

Really though good luck, im thinking of going this route myself.

jnaut 08-25-2010 01:47 PM

TURBO is on order now...woohoo!!

NYBladeZ 08-25-2010 02:41 PM

The Porsches have a rear mounted engine so a rear mounted turbo is a given. :tiphat:

theDreamer 08-25-2010 02:54 PM

Interesting, in for good results hopefully.

96bigbody 08-25-2010 04:44 PM

Sorry that was my attempt of a joke.

What turbo did you go with J?

RCZ 08-25-2010 06:27 PM

Jay, dont rev to 8k with turbo. Not recommended IMO.

RCZ 08-26-2010 01:11 PM

I park next to a panamera both at home and at work. Its actually a beautiful car. I would buy one.

Big J 08-26-2010 02:42 PM

The panamera is sick, in person....

1slow370 08-27-2010 03:08 AM

I've seen one IMO porsche could have done better. Look at the new 4 door aston or the quatraporte
