I was thinking the hinges first, but since I don't have my car I don't really remember if there is a thing pushing it open

I had to check. I was thinking there was a spring in the latch to assist opening, if only the first 1/2" or so, but it didn't feel like one was there when I tried it. (There's is a little "springiness" for the last 1/8" or so when closing, but not really enough to help open the lid.) It appears to be spring-loaded hinges (with some kind of damper) doing all the work.
