How to paint a hood ?

Hi,

I have a Z31 coupe. The paint's clearcoat is coming off in many places. I thought it could look cool if the hood was painted a black, grey, or carbon fiber color.

Can someone tell me the basic steps to painting a hood with clear coat coming off ? Can I use cheap spray paint ?

The alternative is buying a carbon fiber hood on zcarparts.com for over $800. Since the car is worth twice that, it's probably not worth it.

Any tips or advice is appreciated. Thanks

Instead of experimenting on your Hood

Have it painted at a shop so its done right!

Sure, I'd like to; but, the car isn't worth much money. If I want to keep it for a long time, maybe I'll just wait to get a quality job done for the entire car.
I'm curious as to what cheap options are for the hood...

There are none... it will look worse than it does now if you try to DIY... Carbon fiber is a weave material, there is no paint that can even come close to emulating that.

Best bet is if you really think the value of the car is crap, take it to Mayco... if they paint an entire car (with awful paint and clear and no care whatsoever) for $200-500, I am sure they will spray (likely without any prep) your hood for cheap.

Don't expect quality work but it will be better than trying to do it yourself.

Professional painters strip, sand, primer, sand, paint, and clear a car before baking the paint (with a bunch more sanding in the middle). You can't come close to that with a rattle can.

Bigsix - if you take it to Maaco, DO THE PREP WORK YOURSELF. I mean everything - clean it up, sand it down, tape **** off...Maaco doesn't give a **** about prep work. But if you do a good job yourself, it can actually turn out pretty good.

dont bother painting, just buy vinyl and wrap it. It will probably cost you around 50-80$ in materials............

If you are going to spray paint it yourself, use satin black paint. It blends extremely well and you can touch it up with a small spray and it blends nicely.

I used it on my MSA front bumper on my 240z and just spot painted after every track day. The whole bumper is rattle can.
