Just got back from the dealer........and the rattle is gone!!! After 13 months I had a quiet 30 minute drive. I told them to really check the 3rd brake light which they did, they adjusted the latch to make the hatch sit tighter against the seal, and they put a crapload of tape on all of the plastic pieces, and whatever combination it was, it worked. Hopefully it doesn't come back anytime soon!

I got my rattle fixed which original sounded like it is coming from the back of the vehicle. The rattling sound was actually coming caused by the passenger side airbag which the dealer secure the airbag and rattle noise is gone.
However, I recently start hearing minor rattling from the driver's side and believe it is caused by the airbag as well. If it gets louder, I will definitely go back to the dealer. |

Thread res!
Last night, I discovered I had a rattle coming from my center dash. I haven't heard this before. My girlfriend was in the car and helped me locate the rattle. We found that when you open the cubby door in the center of the dash, and push down on the "floor" of the cubby (force directed towards the top of the radio), the rattle stops. I am assuming the rattle is located between the cubby and radio. I will say that the rattle isn't like others I have heard before in other cars. It is a very faint "ticking" and sounds similar to static coming through speakers. The rattle still persists even when the radio is off. Anybody have a similar problem and/or solution? If all else fails, I'll see if the dealer can fix it.

For people mentioning the thing about the rattle being from the third brake light - I'm assuming it doesn't matter if you're hitting the brakes or not, correct!? :-) There should be rattle even in park.. with no brakes on... can someone confirm? (If not then I'm hearing some other rattle).
Secondly, how are you getting to the area to tighten the third brake light? By propping the black plastic coverings? |

I was beginning to wonder at first I thought it might have been a heat shield. But thanks guys I'm going to check these things also.

I may have cured my rattles.
The rattle started up driving down a road that caused a little bit of vibration. The wife pushed on the headliner where the clips hold it to the roof and the rattle stopped. All I did was apply a square of duct tape (with a slit in it for the clip to protrude through) over each of the clips that hold the headliner up, and put everything back together. A test drive produced the faintest of a split second rattle over heavy bumps, but the constant vibrating noise was gone. I'll know for sure after today's run down to DC.

Following all the advice on this forum, I tore up my whole rear hatch (top and bottom), secured everything with double-sided 3M acrylic foam tape and electrical tape, and I am 100% rattle free now.
So, do not be afraid my friends, YOU CAN cure these rattle problems! |

Mine came back too.
I have a better idea for addressing the headliner clips that I'm gonna try this weekend. I've also noticed, as another forum member stated, that the rattle is temperature dependent. When it's cold out, no rattles. But when it gets hot, things must loosen up and the rattles are there.

After four visits under the headliner, I finally cured my rattling, vibrating noises.
Through this process, I got really fast at disassembling the interior of my car, but I hope to not need this skill in the future. What I found to be rattling and vibrating was above me, at about 4:00 relative to my position in the driver's seat. I could make the vibrating stop by pressing up on the headliner, so I knew that this was where I needed to look. On a previous visit under the headliner, I had secured the clips that hold the headliner up by adding double-sided foam tape to the tab that protrudes from the clip, sandwiching the tab so that the clip couldn't move in its holder. I also put duct tape over the clip to isolate it from the metal of the body. Unfortunately, that wasn't the source of the rattle. I also duct taped down the wire that is visible when you pull the headliner down. Refer to the images in schrute's album Unfortunately, that wasn't the culprit either. Having pinpointed where the noises were coming from, I slid my hand further under the headliner towards the front of the car where the inside of the roof curves upward. Just ahead of this curve, I found another wiring bundle coming out of the satellite/navigation antenna. I wedged foam insulation under this plastic covered wiring bundle and taped it securely to prevent movement. I can't show you a picture of this because there is no way to get the camera in there. Just slide your hand in there and you'll find it just to the right of the antenna! While I was under the headliner (again), I re-insulated the wire closer to the hatch, securing the plastic clips with double-sided foam tape, wedging foam insulation between the wire and the metal roof, and duct taping the whole thing down. I can proudly say that my car no longer rattles over bumps, no longer vibrates to the beat like a $500 hooptie with a $5000 stereo, and most importantly, I can drive down the road without constantly looking up at the headliner. Hope this info helps those of you who have rattles over your heads!

Thanks, this has been driving me absolutely crazy. This only happens in the hot sun for some reason. Its fine at night, and fine for a bit after pulling out of the garage until the sun gets on the car. It seems like me and my wife have been taking turns holding our hand up on the headliner in the back there to stop this maddening buzz. I've popped the back off and looked at those plastic clips, just hadn't figured out what I wanted to do about it yet. |
