Ken, you HAVE to post pics of your install and results! I am curious to see how easy the install went for you ;) I hope you like the looks (and fee) of the Ti knob once you get it installed... I just LOVE mine.

nynhex, I would go with the Ti personally. I looked at the CF and black knobs closely, and it didn't give that "feel" and "look" I was going for. It might be right for some modded Z's... but for mine, I wanted it tasteful, yet sporty and aggressive looking, you know? The Ti makes it look stock, but in a sporty kind of way..... like it was "meant" to be there. (same with my exhaust, but that's a diff't story ;))

Thanks G2Z, that's sort of the look I'm going for. "Factory sporty" lol. Most of the mods I'm doing on my Z will be very subtle and really just there for my amusement. I'm not trying to slap on every little part I see. Thanks for the advice, just need to figure out which vendor to buy from.

kdo2milger 05-13-2011 05:15 PM

shift knob looks good.

mental note to self: get these tools from sears for my short shifter install...

Also, as I'm guessing you're a cf fan like me, check out putting either a fake cf wrap or real cf cover for the alluminum gear shift cover thing.

Soaked the base rubber piece in prima nero for about 30min to get the nice matte black.

Ken the new knob looks great! What's prima nero? I thought mine looked dark enough :ugh2: maybe not?

Dang... so since you broke your strap wrench, how did you get the rest of the stock knob off? But yeah, at least you can get a lifetime warranty on the strap wrench... ;)

TheGreatOne 05-14-2011 06:31 AM

Looks good Kenchan, that picture of the stock knob turned half way had me laughing lol.

I still haven't man'd up yet to try and put mine on, need to get that strap wrench.

kenchan 05-14-2011 06:36 AM

G2Z- thanks! it feels good too. :p

Prima Nero is a water bases sauce for interior plastics and rubber.
Detailersdomain sells it. It has a nice matte finish matter than aerospace303.

I used my oil filter wrench to get it off after trying three other pipe wrenches. It was seized. After an hr trying to salvage the knob I decided it was cheaper to get a new one. Hahaha :D

Thanks. on mine there was no way in hell that strap wrench would have enough umph to turn it. It only took me 3 tries to snap the strap. :D

Dealer or kill the stock knob by using oil filter wrench. :D

You are now also hereby obliged to discuss and post pics of your installation upon completion! ;)

bflosabre91 05-16-2011 10:01 AM

this thread should be stickied, imo. noone asked, but ill post pics hopefully this week when i install the black aluminum knob for those who are interested in how it looks. I couldn't find any installed pics of it but i went for it anyway:happydance:

kenchan 05-16-2011 10:26 AM

yah, i wish someone would make an aluminum base ring for our knobs like the PWJDM ones. then we can change colors to our liking, etc.

although the current setup with the Ti knob looks

Wow... thanks for the props man. I never thought of it that way, but hey, if my thread was able to help fellow forum members and other Z owners, then I am glad. (In fact, rep points are appreciated :D)

I am curious to see how the black aluminum would look too! Curious, weigh the OEM knob to the black aluminum... which is better?

Ken... that is a great idea. I mean, from what I remember of the base ring, it wasn't anything special right? Just a black piece of tapered rubber grommet? I would prefer a brushed aluminum/nickel/titanium rin instead... should be tapered too though. Any thoughts? Someplace sell it?

kenchan 05-16-2011 10:41 AM

yep, it's just a tapered rubber grommet that one might be able to find at homedepot. LOL :D

for my titanium, i was thinking more in-line with CF. :p but if there were other colors i would consider doing a black knob + titanium colored base.

Description: Genuine Nismo Black Aluminum Shift Knob brand new in original packaging and straight from Japan. This knob includes a 5 speed shift pattern decal. In most cases, the OEM Shift knob is destroyed when removing. THIS PACKAGE DOES NOT COME WITH THE RUBBER FINISHER.

Hey everyone. This is my first post, however I have been lurking for the last couple weeks since I pick up my 2011 370Z. :happydance: A very happy day to say the least! Not only did I get a great deal on the car, the salesman was kind enough to hook me up with a CF Nismo shift knob.

I was hoping to get the stock knob off as mentioned in other posts with a strap wrench, but there was no way that sucker was coming off. Had no choice but to thrash the stock knob :shakes head: but when it was all said and done, I was VERY happy with results. The picture really does no justice to how beautiful the CF Nismo is, really enhances the interior alot.

Anyway, looking forward becoming an active member here with you all!

Sorry to hear that... yeah, just make sure you find a good tapered one. Also while your there, pick up some rubber 3" tubing... then split that apart and use that to wrap around the OEM knob using a wrench if you can't get the strap wrench to work. Will still save your OEM knob.

Ya, so tonight I tried to take my shift knob off, had a Husky Strap wrench...vice grips, didn't budge...strap wrench kept slipping off.

Made me so upset I went to the gym to lift some 60lb dumbells to make myself feel better lol.

I might try again....by the way, u guys are twisting counter clockwise or clockwise....can't believe the shift knob kicked my ***...never been defeated by a car part before...:icon14:

Guys sorry to hear this... but when I first tried this same setup that I did, the strap wrench was also slipping. I was all anxious, sweaty hands, etc.... LOL. Just make sure you get a good firm grip of both the robo grip and the strap wrench. Make sure the rubber lining on the strap wrench stays inside the groove. It shouldn't slip off.

If it still keeps slipping, wrap some duct tape around the knob, then wrap the strap wrench on that...even electrical tape, whatever makes the strap wrench rubber grab.

kdo2milger 05-17-2011 06:14 AM

i was issued a refund on mine so im gonna hold off on this for the time being...i do intend to get one, but i want to try the stock knob on the short throw first

EazyD 05-17-2011 09:26 AM

Oh no, now I don't know whether I should get the titanium or the CF nismo knobs....... :(

hey, remember this... lefty loosey, rigty tighty. :D so counter clockwise. if the strap wrench slips it's beyond the torque it can handle. if you sandwich a non-slip like i did, SNAP goes the wrench. :rofl2:

Guys...don't feel bad. In a lot of cases, removal of the stock knob is really a two person job depending on the type of tools you have (or don't have). A buddy and I worked at it for over 45 minutes before we could get it off. It was a b!tch to be honest.

Funny thing is...he drives a WRX and changed his shift knob recently. Took him about 10 seconds and the only tools he needed were his hands. :icon17:

Still surprised the strap wrench didn't work for you ;) you're just too strong. Besides, you can use it for oil filters too! and plumbing, etc....
