NISMO Titanium Shift Knob installed!!!!

:happydance:

ALRIGHT!!! Thank you to everyone on this forum. I got it done! I used a combination of everyone's suggestions and it worked like a charm :icon18:

So I used:

1) Robo-grip pliers and rubber protection on plier teeth (both from Sears)
2) Strap wrench (from Sears)

That's it!

Since the Robo-grip pliers had the red rubber protection, I used my left hand and gripped it straight on the shaft after lowering the boot. No marring on the shaft. Then I used my right hand on the strap wrench straight on the stock knob. Voila! It gave IMMEDIATELY. No marring on the knob whatsoever. It was a matter of having the right tools and the right leverage. That stock knob was on there tight though, after loosening it with the strap wrench, I figured I could just loosen it the rest of the way with my hands... but I was wrong. I pretty much had to use the strap wrench all the way till the knob was almost off.

This was my setup. You can see the robo pliers on the left, and the strap wrench on the knob. What a wonderful combo.

Stock knob is off!!! No damage to it (front and back)!!! Look at ALL that Loctite on the shaft threads!!!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...e/DSC_0825.jpg

And here she is all installed!!! I love it!!!

I was surprised the whole affair took me 15 minutes total... just needed the right tools... amazing. I love the new Nismo knob on there. I haven't driven her yet, but am looking forward to it!!! It looks and feels good though however... exactly the look I am looking for.

Thank you again to EVERYone who chimed in and the existing DYI's posted in this forum. You guys are a tremendous help.

Thanks bud! :tiphat: I thought so too. The titanium look goes well with the brushed aluminum trim in the console and around the interior.

Thank you! Yeah I think I saw a DIY on here too for a auto trans knob change. Not sure why it would be needed, since you'd just touch it twice during your drive (one to start, one to park). But hey, to each his own, maybe if I had an AT, maybe I'd change it too :)

kinda transformed the look of the interior, to race mode...looks nice man

I would have to agree with you 100%, definitely more sporty. I had a G35C prior, and I don't think that knob would have worked well with that "look". Z is pure sports.... G was more touring...

Nice! You got the open-O design too! The only thing I changed was the rubber washer, it was too fat and turned grey with prolong use. So I went to home depot and bought multiple thin ones, I think it looks a little bit better.

Thanks Kenchan... I appreciate your suggestions and comment too, throughout this process and in my other thread :)

No problem... I didn't think I really did a full DIY, it was actually pretty simple. I obviously omitted discussing the steps about lifting the console and putting a piece of cloth to protect the rest of the console from tooling marks and accidental scratches.

The robo pliers were 25 bucks for a set of two sizes (one big one small). I felt like it had a much better grip and easier to handle. The strap wrench is just an awesome piece of invention :) It was only 13 bucks for a set of 2 sizes. A must have for anyone I think.

That looks good too! What does the open O mean?

3SeventyZ 03-22-2011 04:54 PM

Nice. Put that rubber stopper thing under the shift boot.
You can kinda get a feel for how it looks in this pic from my album:

(**EDIT: I forgot to mention I have the B&M short shifter so it may fit/look different..)

Hope you like it!

It means the " O " in NISMO is actually a letter " O " and not a circle. :happydance:

I tried exactly like yours 3SeventyZ, but my hand is too big for it (LOL) so I needed more bottom space but the rubber base was ugly. :roflpuke2:

That rubber ring was supposed to be under the boot? I was reading the instructions, and I don't remember it stating that. But you may be right. Your pic is with a BnM Short Shift kit eh? I wonder if anyone can post a pic of their Nismo knob set up with ring under the boot. I guess it won't take me long to unscrew it and pop it on the bottom.

I didn't even know that the Nismo titanium knob came with two options? Or is it just a matter of one being older than the other? So do I have the "good" version then? ;)

StealthZ 03-23-2011 10:42 AM

I loved this in my 350 and have yet to get it for the 370.

TheGreatOne 03-23-2011 12:46 PM

Looks great, I got one in black, cant wait to install it.

You have the better and more expensive version.

How are these on really hot days? I had a machined metal knob on my daily driver before, and for the first 5 minutes on a hot, sunny day, I screamed like a biatch every time I had to shift gears. I used to jump from 1st to 4th gear to minimize the pain.

It gets pretty warm.

Yeah I liked that look too, but I read(heard) that it may be a little "lighter" than the titanium? I may be wrong.

I would imagine it would get pretty warm. I also keep a microfiber towel in the car for dusting the interior at stop lights so I could always throw that on top of the knob after I park ;)

It gets mad hot on mine here in Cali since my car is sunbaked 24/7. What I'm about to do is go seek a tailor or something and make a custom black leather cover with red stitching to prevent it from getting super hot. It will pretty much be just an oblong cover with no close-ends.

They are lighter since it is made of aluminum.

UPDATE: So I finally got to drive her around all week and weekend. Was trying to get a good feel of the shift knob. I must say, it gives the car a totally different feel. Throws seem shorter and crisper, therefore sportier. I love the joystick grip. The knob also looks so great in the interior.

On a side note, the shift patterns on the top of the knob (the one you adhere) are laser etched/engraved, correct? In other words, I won't have to worry about my thumb wearing out the pattern over time?

the paint inside the etching wears away slightly after some use

crap. I shouldn't have removed the plastic cover then :(

I've ordered mine tonight after reading your thread. thanks, fromg2z.

eddieconfetti 03-28-2011 06:08 PM

so the final answer about this titanium shift knob not getting that hot and is bearable to touch during the summer days is true or false.....

thats my only worry about getting aftermarket metal shiftknobs. i dont want to deal with burning my hand.

So far it hasn't gotten hot to the touch. If it does, I have several micro fibers that I can slip on there after I park... no biggie.

CATCHINZZZS 04-16-2011 07:51 PM

Looks Good still have mine in black, But damm cant get the stock one off PITA...Ive tried it all pressure pliers and all. sucks if i have to but those special pliers to use once..

It gets really hot, no joke. Here in CA my car is parked outside 24/7 so it gets baked. One of these days I'm going to have a custom made leather with red stitching to cover it.

If you dont mind destroying your stock knob, then go for it. Otherwise, it will frustrate you due to the amount of loctite Nissan has poured into it.

eddieconfetti 04-16-2011 09:50 PM

i did it and i love it. Seriously is agreat shift knob. only sad thing is i destroyed my stock knob.

nynhex 05-13-2011 12:39 PM

I love the looks of this shift knob. I think I'll get one for my 370z. Where did everyone get theirs? Sorry for thread-jacking

FromG2Z 05-13-2011 01:12 PM

I got the knob from my local dealer.... you can get it anywhere. Even our sponsors on here have them.

And yes, it rocks.

bflosabre91 05-13-2011 01:19 PM

i ordered the black aluminum knob about a week ago. can't wait for it to come in. I got mine from thezstore.com. I hope my install goes as smooth as the OP. Thanks for the how to tho, OP. i will def be using this in the next week or so :D

RoshDawg 05-13-2011 01:39 PM

Does anyone have the cf nismo knob? With a carbonsignal cf gear shift cover I would imagine these two products would look great with each other

Np on the how-to... I figurd I would try to help out someone else with my DIY... Let me know how that turns out. I got the Ti because I liked the look of it with the brushed nickel in the interior of our Z's.

TWYNBYZ 05-13-2011 02:07 PM

I just got the Nismo CF knob but haven't installed it because I need the strap wrench. I guess I'll be stopping by home depot on the way home!

kenchan 05-13-2011 02:45 PM

my titanium knob should be in my hands tonight.

will be installing tomorrow. :D (and yes, thanks to G2Z i have my strap wrench ready). :D

nynhex 05-13-2011 04:30 PM

I'm so undecided between the black knob and the TI/Brushed knob. I guess my touring interior is throwing me off a bit.

kenchan 05-13-2011 04:33 PM

if i was going to do a black knob id get the delrin one (matte-black) from passwordjdm and get a titanium ring for the bottom where it meets the boot. :)
