Question: For past aftermarket knobs that I've put on they tended to be loose and want to move either clock or counter clockwise (depending on it's mood). Are you guys experiencing that w/ the Nismo knob? Should I put a dab of loctite on the threads before installing?
|
^ Happy, no issue with turning/spinning... just tighten down real good. Perhaps the existing loctite remaing on the shaft threads from the factory were sufficient ;)
|
Wat G2Z said. I did not need to use loctite. :)

just use "good-n-tite" torque |
The threads of the NISMO Shift Knobs are not metal like other brands. They are actually Nylon, similar to a Nylon Lock-nut. They should be fine and not free spin. It MAY develop this tendency if it is removed multiple times though.

Cool! It should be here any day now and I'm getting:excited:
|
looks like i will be doing this also... but need to get the B&M Short Throw Shifter and then put on the TI knob.. this way i can preserve the nylon threads..

Ugh, I've been soo busy these last couple of days working a side job that is netting me an extra grand. I'm all like :shakes head: because I want to put them on, but also :excited: because the parts look so sweet! They are beckoning to me, but man...I'm sooo wiped out after spending three to four hours crawling about in an attic cabling my wife's office building with five extra data lines yesterday and finishing all the run terminations and patch panel installation today after working for eight hours. :ugh2: G2z, you will def get rep points, so no worries on that front! |
^ hehe... thanks happy ;)
yeah the knob shouldn't take you too long, bro. You could probably do it in 20 min's or less, as long as you aren't breaking straps like Ken does :) |

well i replaced my stock shifter knob today with Black Nismo one.
was a little concerned after reading this thread, and yes i did run into similiar issues. the stock one just wouldnt turn, so i tried to the duct tape trick. It worked , but was still very difficult to turn, the leather wrap on stock one started to come off, but managed to save it minus the leather on both sides, leather piece down the middle survived and actually looks ok new one on and very happy now, love the feel when shifting :driving: (apologies for picture quality, Blackberry camera) |
CAN-ZED- looking good. i like how you put the shift pattern over the dummy switch cover thingie.

So explain that last pic to me... the leather around the sides came off? So what's the surface remaining on either side of the stock knob??? |

Blurgh..the vise grips that I have are too small..and no other wrench could get a secure enough grip. I had no idea the shaft was going to be as large a diameter as it is.
Going to have to drop by the hardware store tomorrow and get a new pair of vise grips, as recommended. |

GL with the install! |

why is Nissan Predjudiced towards America... I was like wtf, 40th with nav? Oh yea, In canada they can get that... Knob looks great... I am undecided between this one, the password JDM, or that tommy kairra (or whatever its called) knob. that was is super heavy and felt it on a 350z and loved it |

ummm :wtf2:
haha jk ... that does make sense... Shifting aggressively I think most would use the SHAFT style but 95% of the time driving around I just toss it into gear using my palm but your theory does make sense.. another knob is the TWM type R knob thats somewhere inte middle of all of these, also heavy, big type R being heavier than regular type R but its also a bit pricey... |
Quote:
|
FromG2Z- i use the TWM typeR knob on my G. it's a nice piece. :p
for the Z's gearbox i think either shifter works (slim or round types). for the G gearbox it's quite a bit clunkier to get into the gates at times so weighted and round works better for me on that car. |

Still unable to get the time to install. It's been raining every day. :ugh2: |
My black shift knob came in the mail today along with a GTR Start Button. Before I put it on I've painted the Nismo logo with a red O and light grey for the other letters. The red O should work really well with the GTR Button and my red stitching. I'll post some pics once its installed.

I wonder if this aluminum finisher, instead of the cheap looking rubber one, would work on our shaft?
http://WWW.350ZHATCHSHOCKSANDMORE.CO...3cfxtymqv0.jpg Shift Knob Finisher |
happy it might work but I think the rubber finisher is fine. Its a nice contrast to the knob and has a nice match to the boot. :)
|
^Happy that would work, but why? The black rubber one fits really well... and as Ken said, it contrasts the Ti well. Save your 25 bucks ;)
|
|
I think you guys may be right, especially after seeing lochness' install! I will listen to your voices of reason!
|
Shift knob and GTR button installed in (no lie) 20 minutes! Since I had the shift knob off, it made installing the starter button sooo much easier! I was able to move the shifter boot and ring completely out of the way. It was not necessary to disconnect SRM or anything!
Thumbs up and REP to G2Z for the write up! Will post pics as time permits! |

Oh yeah..I only needed the strap wrench for the first two revolutions, and thereafter it was all by hand, baby!
|
^ so the strap wrench REALLY worked for you too? Awesome man. So why is Ken the only one breaking his straps???? Is he just that much more buff than us?!?!?! :D
