Default Door over-opened from heavy wind :(

Was between tall New York city buildings and it was mad windy.. I open my driver door to get out, and the wind pushes it open even more... boom/crack/click.. the black hinge thing pops and flys away.. there's two dents on the outside of the door shell at two stress points (say 1mm each, some paint is chipped but the metal is bent but I can probably live with it)..

But the door immediately pops open..and I have to force it hard to close so it latches/locks.. What can I do about this, is this under warranty or is this an insurance claim for wind damage?

I've actually had work done on this door last year when the car was in an accident so maybe the body shop didn't make it solid enough?.. my fender/door shell etc. were replaced.. maybe I can convince the body shop to fix this for free? (Why would they though)

Definitely not a warranty issue. Doubt the shop will touch it for free. Get ready to possibly file through with a new claim, but I would just take it to the shop to see how much it would be out of pocket.

Z doors are very light, you have to be extra careful when it's windy out, especially here in NYC where gusts can be quite strong. Sorry about the damage though, call insurance :\

It was really windy last weeked, the same thing happed to my sisters car. She hit the car next to her when she opened the door. Luckily it was a crappy car next to her and the owner didn't really care. Which part broke off? That black part is like $29, but you are probably having alignment issues.

Although the doors are probably aluminum, they feel like plastic. Doubt the body shop would touch it for anything but money. Go with the first suggestion, get an out-of-pocket cost and then decide to claim. Would that be comprehensive?

Yeah I called em, body shop isn't going to cover this as part of their "guarantee" on the work they did last year. I didn't expect so.

The thing is, if I claim it through my insurance, I don't know if they're jack my premium up during the next review since it would be a second claim on the Z. First one was about $3,000 of work on the new door/fender.

The part is inexpensive. If he has a $500 deductable, it might not be worth it to go thru insurance. If the part he is refering to is the one I mentioned earlier, its not going to cost more than $500 to repair. Unless of course he wants to replace the entire door panel and repaint.

don't claim anything until you get a quote, this could be a relatively cheap job and way below your deductible.

Well, I can only see it being over 500-600 if you decide to repaint. Otherwise, as long as the damage isn't too bad and you can deal with it, it may be better to wait. Someone here mentioned how he was dinged in a parking lot and was having too much fun driving the thing to care.

The hinges are sprung. It's not the shop's fault. You'll need all the door hinges. They will probably need to be painted. Your door will need to be repaired, and refinished. Also all the attached parts will need to be r-i'd. Handle, belt moulding, mirror, etc. The fender will also need to be blended. Which means the Z emblum, headlamp will need to be r-i'd. Plus they will need to drop the front bumper cover end as well. It's a comp claim. Usually comp claims are forgivable.

This is what happens with light doors. It takes less force to accelerate the door open. If we had heavier doors like the Miata, then it would take a tornado to do what happened to you.

@fillyv yes thats what the quote says, I just got one. Its coming up to $1,100 (need the black hinge, the 2 red (car color) ones too since those are a bit bent, then he talked about some paint stuff on the door and fender like u said too, and talked about moving the lights/bumper too.. and flatenning the two dents on the door edge..

Ugh. May want to talk go your insurance to see if they have any input as far as how your premium may change if you make a claim.
