Stitch dye? Anyone brave enough to try?
I was browsing the Camaro5 forum and stumbled into a thread discussing dye for the various stitchings in the car. They were talking about using an acrylic at first but it they started using a fabric dye pen. It seems to work pretty well and no one has mentioned any fading. (Camaro5 links at bottom of post)
Obviously you don't want to use this on fabric seats but it could definitely be used on the seats of the touring model and the console/shifter/cubby hole of all models. ive always wondered if there was such a thing ill be will to try it out... anyways if the cubby ***** up.... im having my whole console wrapped by tony so it dont really matter
If you do make sure you follow the instructions posted there. Wiping it down every foot or so to protect the leather and all that jazz. :) Don't forget to take pics!
I am tempted to try this out on the cubby stitching, that video almost makes it look too easy!
Simota, let us know how it turns out if you do it. I really want to give this a shot.
damn... kinda neat actually, in for potential results! i think orange or red stitching would look pretty nice.
I am soooo doing this. The only question is... red or blue?

I'll try to photoshop some colors tonight. Does anyone have a good hi-resolution picture of their interior? |
I'd love to have my stitching in red, but I got fabric seats. Still would be nice.
Wow, that kinda cool!
That's pretty cool!
I agree with Hotdog... go with something you can live with. Not to mention if you ever plan on selling the car some wild stitching color might turn off potential buyers! |
This is sooo badass! I'm doing it as soon as I can get my hands on the pens!
Oh, a tip you can use to avoid so much over application on the seats themselves is to get some painter's tape and apply it on either side of the stitching you plan to dye.
^good idea
would this be at all possible on cloth seats? or would it die the black cloth too?

Ok im convinced after looking thru the camaro forum... going to do mine in blue.

I'm leaning towards red. Might do it tomorrow if I have time.
what about the steering wheel? those threads look black, not sure how it would come out, or at all.
Dying black threads wouldn't really work out too well.
I don't think that would work at all
yeah i think it would look kinda shitty with white threads on my seats and red on the console/dash
it'll work on the cloth seats, just be careful if you do decide to do it. If you get some on the black it'll hardly be noticeable, just a slightly darker black spot.
I like!
Yellow please! :) |

I know this sounds insane but what about bleaching the black threads on the steering wheel? If it was diluted enough I bet it wouldn't eat the threads but I have no idea what the bleach would do to the steering wheel itself. If it actually worked then maybe the wheel could be matched to the rest of the threads.
Anyway, crazy. I know. :) |

I wonder if they make one of those dye pens with a really thin tip so I could do the cloth seats with as little over on the black cloth as possible. |
I can actually see the red smudge on the leather after the excess is wiped with cloth.
it will leave uneven smudge on the surface and will be apparent under good light source.. problem is that the marker does get absorbed into stitching but does not absolutely repel leather material and will leave permanant smudge, and you could damage your leather trying to get smudge off with chemicals unless you do some extensive chemical experiments |

Really? Happen to have some pictures? I'd love to see it. A guy over at Camaro5 said the same thing but a little bit of cleaner once the dye dried and it cleaned any smears right up. Quote:

I started doing mine today and I have a few tips already.
Our stitching is closer to a grey color so if you use the red FabricMate type dye pen it will look maroon not red. I wasn't very happy when I started this morning so I went to walmart and picked up a Painters marker. This is a acrylic paint filled marker. It makes the stitching much darker. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-6595326..._2143_25275059 I also decided that I wasn't happy with the red color so I got a blue one. It covered the FabricMate red without a problem. I am soooooo glad that I went with the blue. It looks sick! I am working on it now and I'll get some pics up a little later. |
Sweet! Can't wait to see the pics.

Same here!!! Can't wait for pics!

Here are some quick shots with the iPhone.
I don't have time to finish today but what I've got so far I am VERY happy with. http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...27458-nice.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...looks-good.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...enger-side.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...enger-seat.jpg Here is the difference from stock: http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...ivers-side.jpg A little closer http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...difference.jpg This is super easy and makes a HUGE difference. |
