Thanks! Too much sand and salt on the roads to drive it so I'm sure it'll be nice and set by the time I get back in it.

One more tip:

Keep rinsing out your damp rag. The cleaner you keep it the easier it will be to clean the excess off of the seat.

Now I need to figure out how to color the stitching on the suede door panels. Might just have to go to an upholstery shop for that one.

3SeventyZ 01-27-2011 02:10 PM

kind of an interesting idea

Falcor 01-27-2011 03:16 PM

Looks great, rates about a 10 for bang for the buck DIY.

6spd 01-27-2011 03:47 PM

looks great, cant wait to see red. and i can foresee this mod spreading like wildfire.

Lemers 01-27-2011 04:16 PM

Man. Looks good. How easy is this to mess up?

Damn near impossible to screw up. Just be careful with the marker and have two rags on hand. One damp and one dry. Rinse the damp rag often and I would also replace the dry one after a little while.
Use the marker to color about 6 inches of the stitching then use the damp rag to wipe off the excess. Then use the dry one to wipe it down further.
That's all there is to it.

Our stitching is closer to a grey color so if you use the red FabricMate type dye pen it will look maroon not red.

I wasn't very happy when I started this morning so I went to walmart and picked up a Painters marker.
This is a acrylic paint filled marker. It makes the stitching much darker.

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-6595326..._2143_25275059

I also decided that I wasn't happy with the red color so I got a blue one.

It covered the FabricMate red without a problem.

I am soooooo glad that I went with the blue. It looks sick!

I am working on it now and I'll get some pics up a little later.

How did the Painters marker look when you painted red..??

Did it look maroon as well or actual red..?? I have a red Z so my obvious choice is to go with red..

Lemers 01-27-2011 05:37 PM

I'm one of the few who would want maroon if it's close to the blackcherry

6spd 01-27-2011 07:53 PM

orange would match pretty well maybe?

Lemers 01-27-2011 07:57 PM

If I had black exterior I could see orange claspers and orange stitches

yea thats what i meant! w/ black interior.

Falcor 01-27-2011 08:37 PM

I too would like maroon to go with my cherry z. I think red stich would clash

sstevens7 01-27-2011 08:39 PM

This is a great idea. Loving it. Next thing on list is to try and find a good "Painters" pen over here in Italy. Don't want to have to wait on one in mail if I can't find one!

6spd 01-27-2011 08:54 PM

italy must have walmarts...? what doesn't?

I didn't use the Painters marker when I did the red. I started out using a FabricMate dye marker from The Hobby Lobby.
I was going back and forth about wether to do red or blue and when I saw the maroon color on the seats I just decided that blue would look better.
I really only did about 18 inches of stitching on the passenger seat when I made the decision to switch. Honestly I think I got lucky that it covered the red. It wouldve looked like crap if it didn't.

If you want the maroon color then use the red fabric dye marker and not the acrylic paint pen.

I was waiting for Tony to pop in here (2theextreme) because this would be one more blue mod.. .but I forgot he had orange seats :D

docaam 01-27-2011 11:20 PM

What about the console and cubby hole? Or are you going all out on your interior, in which case I can't possibly wait to see it. :)

Sibze 01-27-2011 11:35 PM

So you think it would look red using the Painters Marker, which is acrylic paint, right..??

I'm actually going for the red look.. I don't want maroon..

Also, did you use the fine tip or the medium tip..??

Yes, the Painters marker should give you a nice red color.
I used the medium tip but now that I think about it, the fine tip might be less messy.

Falcor 01-28-2011 08:13 AM

I tried the fine tip on 2 threads on the back of the cloth seat to see if it would be possible. I think it would be possible if there were an "extra fine" tip but even with the fine tip it is still to wide and impossible not to get on the black cloth.

If anyone comes across an extra fine tipped marker let me know.

I live in Panama, Central America, so no Walmart for me. I went to MarkerSupply.com and found a nice variety of Elmer's Painters Markers.

There's supposed to be an Ultra Fine tip but the have it available ON SALE and only in blue. Can't find any other ultra fine tips on the site.

They do have the Fine and Medium tips in several colors...

Falcor 01-28-2011 10:00 AM

I called Elmer's and they told me that they dont sell a red ultra fine. So i guess im outta luck unless i can find another brand.

*i just found Deco color makes an ultra fine in red and it sells on the website markersupply.com I'm going to get a couple and try them out.

This is super easy and makes a HUGE difference.

The blue looks excellent! I was going to do mine Wednesday night but thanks to the snow storm we got here in DC area i was happily stuck in traffic for 6 hrs (usually takes 45 min) on the beltway. So... maybe tonight ill go buy it and get going... but its snowing again.... :shakes head:

6spd 01-28-2011 10:25 PM

i wonder how the long term durability is gonna be? You'd think the driver seat area on the left would wear off real fast from getting in and out so often. And then there is fading from the sun as well.... well its not like it cant be reapplied!

True. Some of the Camaro guys say it'll last for months. Not sure about the acrylic though as some of them are using the dye. Like you said, it can be easily reapplied if it does fade down the road.

6spd 01-31-2011 03:30 PM

anyone else try this and have pics?

also, anyone have a direct link to a red ultra fine marker?

ThoriumHotdog 02-02-2011 05:14 AM

Anyone else give this a try over the weekend?

Falcor 02-02-2011 07:39 AM

I already tried with the decocolor extra fin tip pens i ordered, It worked great on my cloth seats...except, the color was way wrong. not even close to the red shown it was pink like very pink. I have ordered some sharpee brand extra fine red acrylic pens to see if those will work to go over the pink.

CATCHINZZZS 02-02-2011 07:54 AM

Gonna try myself on these snowy days. looks good gonna go with red just dont know what brand. And my seats are fabric.. But some recomended fabric paint not the Acrylic...

Falcor 02-02-2011 07:59 AM

That would probable work better as far as longevity is concerned. Seems like a lot of the people I have seen are using the acrylic paint markers, however it does seem like those would fade or wash out.

pty370z 02-02-2011 09:43 AM

I'm waiting for my markers to come on the mail down here in Panama.. Oh the waiting, always the waiting... Wish I could get more things locally..

PapoZalsa 02-02-2011 10:20 AM
