Ya but how's their turn around time? I couldn't really drive without the stereo put back together.

kenchan 07-14-2010 08:36 AM

here's the roof wrap i did a few days ago (but ended up removing per earlier post, didn't like the faux roadster canvas look):

after removing it, here's where it ended up... :D the wrap was too small so only did this as practice.

pretty impressive how forgiving this stuff is, huh? :p

Ya mine def has a gap next to the circles. You think it will work if I tuck the vinyl into the circles?

I got my fenders cut there on my IS one of the fenders had been hit before, it peeled a little chunk of paint off.. they offered to either spot spray it the next day or to repaint the whole side of the car to blend it...... for free.
They wanted 400 for the wood trim on an IS with a core exchange. There are not that many pieces or as large on a Z so I cant see it being that much. If any members here would like prices I can talk to them about it tomorrow.

Interested!

if you're taking the trim out you should be able to get all the areas wrapped.

although it doesn't bother me if the perpendicular part is not fully wrapped it still looks pretty good as long as the base of the perpendicular area is wrapped cleanly.

So I just got my samples today. I got a sheet of "leather," a sheet of silver CF, and a sheet of "suede." The Suede is nothing to write home about... I guess from far away it could look like suede but it's not impressive.

The leather is actually really nice. The pattern and the color is very believable. I think I might order a larger sheet to wrap the top of an old desk with it.

The Silver CF is actually pretty interesting. It's got some metallic flake to it so it's pretty cool. Obviously it doesn't look very much like real CF but I really dig the look. Very cool. I might wrap an HD enclosure with it and I'll get a couple pics.

kenchan 07-16-2010 08:39 AM

^^ keep us posted on your project. leather trim sounds good, i might be interested in wrapping some of my G's bits with that. :)

i too was thinking about how my roof couldve looked with the silver CF... not going to try anymore though. ive already flushed a few hundred on CF sheets that i tried and did not work out (trash) so far in the last 3wks. hahaha. :D

im expecting my new smaller roll to arrive late afternoon. :p

I don't think I would wrap any car pieces with the leather trim. It's more suited for furniture and indoor stuff, IMO.

Also, I don't think the silver would look good on the roof. It would probably look neat as an interior application though. But not on the Z... on a different car.

kenchan 07-16-2010 08:45 AM

^^ oh ok, thanks for the info!

Great job Kenchan on the wrap... what did you have to do when you got the corners...? any 3m primer? or over stretching happen?

thanks. :D for smooth surfaces you dont need to use primer/adhesion promotor, but on textured surface it is needed. depending on the radius of the corners i would either just wrap it eactly to shape with no over lap, or heat it and stretch it over onto the backside of the trim where you can use other tapes/adhesives to make it a permanent wrap as needed. :)

NewYorkJon34 07-16-2010 03:03 PM

Yay, my big a$$ roll of carbon fiber vinyl came in. Time to get wraping ;)

kenchan 07-16-2010 10:59 PM

^^ how did things go? my heatgun died today... lol :D i think i used it too much. so i pulled out my regular large heatgun and did the work below. no template this time... :p

Now how is it gonna hold up to the engine bay heat? 3m tested it to 150*F but the bay gets hotter than that.

im not sure, we'll find out. i scorched the film real good though past 150F so it doesn't shrink or change shape any more. :D

TongMan 07-16-2010 11:09 PM

I guess kenchan beat me to it. Now let us know how it will hold up after some time. BTW, I didn't know the engine cover was in two pieces...wow, I learned something new.

WarmAndSCSI 07-16-2010 11:27 PM

That looks really good. Seems like the vinyl is pretty easy to work with.

I consider wrapped CF items "rice" by definition anyway since they're absolutely useless for performance, so I might as well just go with the vinyl stuff since it honestly has the same look. I wonder how it looks with a thick clear coat or gel over it. Hmmm

NewYorkJon34 07-16-2010 11:40 PM

Wrapping exterior items is kinda rice-ish to me, but a few interior things that no one can carbon fiber is alright with me.

zero 07-16-2010 11:41 PM

It would be interesting to see if someone will wrap the rims.

It's OK in my opinion if the items are really just cosmetic anyway (i.e. you couldn't save any weight with a carbon fiber replacement). Badges, grille covers, mirror covers, etc. To wrap your hood or fenders in CF vinyl or real CF would be kind of trashy... I'm beginning to really dislike CF panels anyway except on black of dark grey cars. It's really, really played out at this point. Just too clashy for my tastes.

TongMan 07-16-2010 11:54 PM

I remember some dude wrapping his whole BMW in black vinyl...read it in a forum somewhere...can't remember.

I can't imagine doing that to a BMW, the sun must have killed it by now.

TongMan 07-17-2010 12:13 AM

Here a M3 that is mostly wrapped in vinyl:

If your going to carbon fiber something like a hood or any body piece for that matter then its been to do it right and buy the piece made outta real carbon fiber. I don't think carbon fiber is played out, its just everyone forgot that too much carbon can be a bad thing & if you add too much it can ruin the clean look of the car. If I were to get a vented carbon hood, I'd paint it either all white or just leave the vents showing the carbon while the rest was white.

These CF wraps is nothing different than painting...if tasetully done it's not rice imho. :) the film is wrapped like it was painted.

For example, the engine cover has silver paint as decoration. Serves no purpose other than for aesthetics. Same as door sills, cluster trim, etc etc. The real CF fangs, diffusers, same thing. Just done over do it...this is why I've been peeling some of my work that I spent a good time and $ on like the Z's roof and rear valance on my G. Just wasn't my style.

The trick is don't over do it. :). I know its tempting. Hahaha! :D

When I got my wrap I literally walked around the whole car trying to see what I could do. I was going to do the wood trim, navi housing, grill shell, trunk spoiler, shift knob, and roof. All I wound up doing.... the wood trim.

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 11:38 AM

It's Carbon Fiber day!!! I get the fun task of re-doing my head unit trim, yay:ughdance:

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 11:48 AM

This time around I went and bought the proper tools for the job: http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/4d0b3c0b.jpg

kenchan 07-17-2010 01:23 PM

screw drivers? you didnt have screw drivers? :D ;)

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 02:24 PM

I did, but I didn't have a Torx screw driver

Sorry, I already returned it. :(

Which trim did you want to see? I vaguely remember, I might be able to give you an idea what it looked like.

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 04:44 PM

The car ID Carbon Fiber headunit cover, the piece that goes around the nav & the 3 circles

Yah, it looked pretty cheezy. The holes were not full circles on the outer two dials and the pieces were all thick like almost 2mm. The CF itself looked like steel wool strands and the weaves were small..

If you're as picky as I am you would not want it. :D

You took the bezel off the car right? Should be pretty easy to wrap with a heatgun(?). :)

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 05:08 PM

Actually it was still a pain, it doesn't like to conform to the shape of the dials. When you wrap it up the dials air gets trapped under the vinyl and just won't go away. I hate this wrap, lol
