Yah, you can take a pin and puncture it from the side, heat it again and press it down. Should work. :)

Keep applying heat (not too hot) so that it won't change shape anymore. Seems to be the trick. :p

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 05:40 PM

Ok bro, I'll try that after I finish eating dinner. If it works for tint, then why not vinyl right ;)

Yah, it actually works better! No signed of puncture left behind after heating and pressing down. :)

NewYorkJon34 07-17-2010 07:23 PM

It kinda helped alittle bit, but for the 3 dials you really have to curve it instead of a 90 degree wrap. Let's just say it's the best it's going to be.

kenchan 07-17-2010 09:30 PM

post up some picts when done. :)

kenchan 07-18-2010 12:06 PM

unfortunately the film could not withstand the engine heat and unwrapped itself in a few areas... so if you're going to do this for a show, be sure to remove the cover until you're ready to display.

oil temp 210F degrees, ambient 78F, cover temp 164F right after the drive. the areas that were not stretched and wrapped over was fine though.

good to know...gotta rep you for testing this.

metz 07-18-2010 02:56 PM

Just an FYI since I saw the question somewhere. You cannot cover this in resin or anything like it. I work with real carbon and had some of the 3m stuff laying around so I tried to cover it in an epoxy. It causes it to just basically go black. Seems to be that it takes the texture out of it so now the lights not reflecting on it giving the carbon look.

hey thanks.

the adhesive left behind a permanent mark on the engine cover so i decided to prime, sand, and paint it glossy black using engine enamel paint. i could've just done regular matte-black but it would've been too stock looking for the amount of work put in. :icon14:

only noticeable to someone with a Z.

Anyone think about wrapping the outside door handles instead of painting black?

Ztoon 07-20-2010 12:23 AM

Pin punctures to get rid of the air pockets seems to work at first..... Check it out after a couple weeks with the warm weather beating down on it. That invisible pin hole stretches and expands to a good size hole, just to stare back at you until the anal part of your personality makes you strip it and start all over again!!!

Just a hypothetical question, but do you all think I'd have any problems wrapping the upper vinyl on the door panels? Could it be done on the car with the doors open?

Looking to make that an initial phase of our fake CF wrapping project. After that will be the lower dash.

m4a1mustang 07-20-2010 01:03 PM

You might have a hard time getting it to adhere to the textured surface.

That's what I was thinking.

I think I'll order the size I need. If it works out, good... If it doesn't, I'll use it for other wrapping projects.

I'll definitely test out a small square on the door panel before wasting a $45 piece of vinyl on it.

Vegitto-kun 07-20-2010 01:07 PM

Lol the GT-R/Z tuner I know was bashing hard on these type of things.

"people too cheap to buy real carbon shouldn't buy these types of ****"

Yeah, that's the thought that immediately popped into my head... except, for what the Di-Noc seems to be used is "rice" by most elitists' standards anyway. Hence, I don't care. It looks nice, I'll rock it. After all, CF wrapping is all about cosmetics anyway. Definitely no weight savings involved in wrapping an interior piece. :rofl2: But elitists will try to argue as though there is all kinds of merit in cosmetic CF wrapping.

I'm sure he's got some wood veneer somewhere in his office or home... tell him he's a ricer because he's too cheap to buy real wood furniture. :roflpuke2:

"Real" carbon is actually pretty cheap (relatively). The manufacturers dump huge markups on pieces half of the time -- and in the cases of companies like Seibon, it isn't even 100% carbon.

kenchan 07-20-2010 01:46 PM

yah, i think the DiNoc will have problems adhereing to the door panels due to the texture.... you can probably get by if you use some adhesion promotor, but then it will be a premanent coating on your door. the beauty of these wraps is that you can remove it if you dont like how it turned out or want to change color down the road. :p

ofcourse wrapping it with real carbon fibers is an ideal way of going bout these projects
and there are kits that come with real weaves, resins, and polishes, etc but it's a lot of
work for basically the same thing... for aesthetics. the resin ones are more durable
though and have a very professional glossy finish like oem trim. :)

for me, these wraps do very well and since there's really no toxic chemicals involved
i can work on my car while my kids are playing nearby. it's easy to apply and really no
special tools involved. :D

I'm def not too "cheap" to buy real carbon fiber, but how the hell are you going to carbon fiber $hit like the steering wheel volume area, etc...

There are many different reasons why some of us members buy the 3M CF vinyl: for wrapping things that can't be carbon fibered, or just a novelty item to mess around with. To me this product would be rice, if for example you wrapped exterior items such as your hood, roof, etc and told people that it was real carbon fiber.

m4a1mustang 07-20-2010 02:26 PM

Plus, if you prefer the "dry" look this is a good alternative.

NewYorkJon34 07-20-2010 02:28 PM

After messing with this product, I think I actually perfer the glossy carbon look, lol

yah, especially for the b-pillars i like the dry-look. makes that part of the car not stand out so much and easier for the eyes to focus on the other lines of the car. :)

now the roof was a bit too much for me....

NewYorkJon34 07-20-2010 02:37 PM

Anybody know a place where I can just send in my metra headunit trim piece and have it wrapped in real carbon fiber. I want it to match my the door pieces that I have that are real CF. The vinyl looks ok, but that piece is just too much of a PITA (damn 3 dials ;)) and I think its just going to keep bothering me, lol

All his carbon parts are custom made by some company in japan. he basically feels that it is insulting to the car to plaster it with carbon vinyl.

the power of speaking japanese

NewYorkJon34 07-20-2010 02:43 PM

^Who are you even talking about?

m4a1mustang 07-20-2010 02:43 PM
