TongMan 07-12-2010 07:42 PM

Are you talking about the black part around the silver? wouldn't it get too hot in there?

Try it man, see how it holds up to the heat

TongMan 07-12-2010 11:39 PM

Best way to find if it'll hold up against the heat is to try it.

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 12:04 AM

I really don't think it will, it barely holds up in the car's interior on a hot day, lol IMO this is not going to look good after a couple of drives.

I know a place locally to me (as in 10 minutes) that will wrap your stuff in CF no matter what you bring them and its HIGH quality

actually during my last drive, i put a strip of the vinyl on the radiator cover, engine cover, along the side of the battery cover to see how well the 3M could withstand heat.

all passed.

i did the roof last night. as with my G35C's rear valance, it turned out very nice but it just did not go with the rest of the car for me. :icon14::icon14:

the biggest issue i had with the 3M on the roof was that it reminded me of my dad's (new at the time) 1982 old's ninetyeight with the faux leather top. :icon14:

kinda like not a faux CF look, more like a faux canvas roadster look. :ugh2:

it took a good 3hrs to install, but ended up removing it this am. :icon17: i'll post up picts later on.

i crumpled up the roll but going to heat it and re-use on my Fit's hood. should give it a nice consistant ricor look, right? :rofl2:

Hey kenchan do u still have ur template for the area around your head unit. I don't really like how it came out around the 3 circles. I'm sure I'm the only one that would notice it, but I'm kinda anal about my car & have to have everything perfect. Is there anyway you could scan & e-mail it to me? I really don't want to but I might try and redo it :(

im going to be re-doing mine so that the HU opening wraps into the HU opening and to see if i can get the circles tighter to the perpendicular lip of the control dials. i'll scan one up for you when i finish. :p im going to try to get that done in the next day or two. mine also does not wrap completely up to the dial though... i'd have to remove the trim from the car if i was to do that.

weather permitting i want to work on ricing up my FitSport to the fullest tonight before the adhesive collects too much dust on the 3M i peeled off the roof this am from the Z. :rofl2:

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 01:31 PM

Thanks bro, I don't think I'm going to take all my stuff apart again as it was too much of a pain. Do you have the metra faceplate kit? I noticed it's not quite the same as the stock faceplate.

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 01:33 PM

When you scan it I guess send it to my e-mail address: NewYorkJon34@Yahoo.com

yah, ive already taken out my HU like 5x and know wat you mean. :icon17: im not interested in removing it again either unless my HU needs to be replaced.

ouch, i have the factory bezel so my template wont work. :icon14: the hvac circles are probably the same, no?

np!

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 01:38 PM

I think the circles are alil bit bigger on the metra kit. I wish I was better at making these stupid templates, lol

kenchan 07-13-2010 01:41 PM

bigger is good cause you can always trim mine to size. :p

yah, the template took me a good 2.5-3hrs to do. but the end result is well worth it. :D
applying the real skinny part of the cutout (bottom corners) is a little tricky but with a little patience doable.

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 01:56 PM

K, send me your template & I'll see what I can do with it. I def believe you worked 3 hrs. on that template, doing these can be a bitch, lol

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 03:50 PM

ok I just ordered a 12"x48" sheet of the vinyl. Ya know kenchan I don't think I'll need to make a template, but unfortunately I'll need to remove everything again. What I'm going to do is instead of trying to cut it close to the 3 circles, im just going to tuck it into the circles and hopefully everything is flat and smooth.....hopefully(key word) ;)

kenchan 07-13-2010 03:57 PM

Newyorkjon- yah, if i was going to remove the trim i would wrap the entire trim over the holes, then cut a hole around the center of the hvac dial opening to about 1/2" from the lip and tuck it over into the hole.

BUT, before you do that, i would also sand off a good 0.3mm from the hvac dial opening to compensate for the flim thickness. otherwise when you push your dials through, the film could get caught and be pushed out. :)

m4a1mustang 07-13-2010 03:58 PM

I've been trying to source pictures of the other di-noc films... I want to see their suede and leather textures for some non-car things I am thinking about.

like a toothbrush or something? :icon14: ;)

kenchan 07-13-2010 04:01 PM

btw, if anyones' interested, i have my EvoR B-pillars for sale in the private parts for sale forum. ...man that dont sound right!

i like the look of the CF wraps better. :p

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 04:06 PM

I kinda don't think I'll need to sand it down, because it is bigger then the stock piece. The distance from the middle circle knob to the edge of the face plate for example has a bigger opening. I'll tell ya what though, Im def having a beer before I do this **** again, then 2 more when Im done, lol Having to rip the old carbon vinyl off is going to make me :crying:

:rofl2: hahaha!!! it is a pretty painful process i agree. good to hear your metra trim has some play so that you can fill up the gap.

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 04:13 PM

So you have those pictures of it on your roof? How did you cut it to shape?

yep, i'll post them up later. i cut the general shape first, peeled back the liner half way and cut the liner off. wrapped from the center of the roof outwards to about 12-13mm from the edges using no heat.

then took my scissors and cut so that i would have about a 7mm overlap, used my heat gun and squeegee to push the film into the nooks to wrap. i pulled up on the Z's roof side pieces (the a-pillar cover) and tucked the film under without removing the a-pillars. then did the other side. i might even suggest spraying a mist of distilled water on the center of the roof at the very beginning so that the adhesion is not super strong while you get the film to center up.

at the very end i took my heat gun and went over the entire film. the work itself was pretty damn good, i must say. :yum: but it just made the car look like it had faux canvas for a roadster... :eekdance:

i did it with no help. :)

m4a1mustang 07-13-2010 08:03 PM

Looks good.

FWIW I ordered a leather and a suede sample of the di-noc. Not for the car but for some things around the house that I have in mind...

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 08:31 PM

Dang those pieces look good, I wish they could do my headunit faceplate.

m4a1mustang 07-13-2010 08:32 PM

There are DIY real carbon kits out there that come out really well.

NewYorkJon34 07-13-2010 08:52 PM

Ya like that carbon-mod kit, I might check that out. If the area around the circles was flat, there would be no problem. But of course Nissan has to add alil quark to every part on the car.

Why wouldnt they be able to? Im almost positive they would. They are one of the most well know reputable shops in so cal. they do HIGH end work and have amazing customer service. I got my fenders cut there on my IS one of the fenders had been hit before, it peeled a little chunk of paint off.. they offered to either spot spray it the next day or to repaint the whole side of the car to blend it...... for free.
They wanted 400 for the wood trim on an IS with a core exchange. There are not that many pieces or as large on a Z so I cant see it being that much. If any members here would like prices I can talk to them about it tomorrow.
