I can't think of anything in the shift mechanism that would cause the problem so maybe it has something to do with the position sensor plate. But I've only seen

I can't think of anything in the shift mechanism that would cause the problem so maybe it has something to do with the position sensor plate. But I've only seen 'sploded diagrams and haven't torn into one. When it won't go into gear, is it free to move in the neutral gate? Do you get a "hard" hit when trying to put in gear (metal-to-metal) or a "softer" (plastic involved) one?
