Default z wont start

so on saturday i was coming out of the gym, got in my car and it wouldnt start. i figured it might be the battery so my friend jumped it and it started right back up. Then sunday night after it was sitting pretty much all day i went to leave my house and it wouldnt start again. I tried jumping it but had no luck this time. its not the steering lock, ive already had that issue and was able to fix that thankfully by hitting it and pulling the fuse. Right now it sounds like its trying to start but its just not happening. the lights come on and everything so do you still think it could be the battery? when i just switch the ignition to on the volts are reading 10. The cars an 09 with 19xxx miles. i was thinking about just buying a new battery and testing that and if that didnt work just returning it. Any help would be appreciated.

If it's the original 2009 battery i'd definitely consider getting a new one. I've read that the stock batteries in the early year Z's were crap. When I bought my 2009 Z the first thing I did was buy a battery (and pulled the steering lock fuse). Believe it or not I bought a Champion from Walmart. So far it seems to be tough as nails. I left it connected to the Z all winter and it always started fine...and we had a terribly long, cold winter here in the north.

Bought my '09 brand new and the battery lasted right around 2 years. It hesitated to start on Monday and was completely dead by Tuesday where it could no longer hold a charge.

At 10 volts on the meter, assuming it is correct, is a clear indication of a dead cell in the battery. In a 12 volt battery each cell is supposed to be good for 2.2 volts (at peak charge) That means if your battery is pristene, it should be reading 13.2 volts. This is fairly rare. But it should be reading more than 12 for a battery that is not boogered up.

as jpkirk points out, 10V is a sign that something is wrong. Probably the battery but you might want to get someone to take a look at the charging system.

I'm still running on my '09 OEM battery after 24,000+ miles. I guess I got lucky.

Did you check the battery of your FOB? That happened to me and it was the FOB battery. I changed the battery and the Z started right away. I still have my OEM battery in my 09.

95% probability it is the battery. Good way to rule out the alternator is to check your belt/pulley tightness and if the belt is in good condition. Look at the alternator for any discolouration on the contact points on the back wiring, smell the housing to see if there is a strong metallic "burnt" smell, or black residue on the housing.

Check the levels in the battery - 6 cells. There's a real good chance that it hasn't been properly serviced in a while. I had one shop try to tell me that all 370Zs had maintenance-free batteries. smh
