So tell me, if it was so 'normal' for the motor to burn a quart of oil every 1k miles why do some people burn 1+ quart and some burn none?

I didn't say a qt/1000 was normal. I did say that is generally the threshold that Manufacturers will start to pay attention to you.

Engines and parts are made by people and machines, neither of which are perfect. Everyone interprets break in differently. There are a ton of variables. The world is not a perfect place. Some engines are not truly broken in til they are north of 5000 miles. It took 10K for my Audi Turbo to settle into a no-burn scenario. If everyone revisited this a year or 2 after purchase it would most likely be a non-issue.
