Default Transmission continued to rev while in neutral...

I have no mods and about 3000 miles on the car. It is the sport model 6 speed manual so it has the synchro rev match.

This has happened twice at random times. Car was running fine both times. Then I pull up to a stop light after downshifting. Then I place the car in neutral and it will sit at 2000 rpms. Then it will continue to rev. In the 2nd instance it got up to 3000 rpms before I put the car in 2nd gear and left the stop light. After moving the revs go back to normal. Then it happens again at the next stop light. Finally I get to my destination and turn off the car. I start the car up again about 15 minutes later and everything is back to normal.

Any ideas, suggestions? I am guessing if it doesn't happen all the time it's not that big of a deal. And if the people at Nissan can't replicate it when I take it to the dealer they won't do anything anyways.

EDIT: I guess I should have made the title more clear. Obviously it will rev while in neutral. What I meant is that the revs stayed high and continued to get higher.

This SOUNDS like a problem associated with SRM.....

sounds like the rev match is over anticipating a gear...could be a faulty srm.

I was trying a couple of things today and my conclusion is that the SRM doesn't like to be downshifted into 2nd and then right into neutral. The lowest I have been downshifting before coming to a stop is 3rd and then neutral and the SRM seems to like that a lot better. This is not scientific by any means. It may just be coincidence and it will happen again tomorrow.

By the way I took it to the dealer today and of course they could not replicate it and they could hardly even understand what I was talking about.

good call taken it in..you dont want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with tranny pieces littered underneath and behind...

if they test drove it and could not replicate it then they probably didnt do the 2nd to neutral shift...

ive noticed in mine that my rpms will jump up momentarily if i come out of gear coming to a stop and push the shifter over like im downshifting but i dont actually downshift into that gear...

did you drive it with them in the car, so you could recreate it?

No I probably should have. But like I said it doesn't happen all the time so I may not have been able to make it happen myself. I guess until the transmission goes out completely nothing is going to happen.

If you meant just turn the SRM off when this is happening, that doesn't work. I tried that the last time it happened.

I think I have resolved the issue, so hopefully if this happens to anyone else they will know what is happening. If you are downshifting into 2nd from a higher rpm, the srm will have to rev match at a higher rpm so it takes a little more time to actually get into 2nd gear. I figured out that I was never completely in 2nd when I shifted into neutral, so the srm got all screwed up.

I noticed mine does that but it only does it if I have the clutch pushed in while the car is in neutral... and it does it really bad if I have the clutch in and its in neutral and i kinda wiggle it back and forth out of boredom while coming to a stop

Don't know why this would happen with SRM off, but the SRM system continues to operate for about 3 seconds when you shift to neutral with the clutch depressed. It is programmed to rev the engine, even when shifting to neutral, to anticipate a downshift. Try shifting to neutral at 70mph and see what it does....it'll rev the crap out of the engine.

So, it doesn't explain why it would do it with SRM off or when stopped. But the SRM will rev it even when shifting to neutral if you're at speed.

Trav

Something to note: if you are downshifting to N and happen to cross one of the sensors for say gear 3 when going from 4->N it will rev and die down after you leave it in N. A solution to not get it to rev is 1/2 clutching when you go from 4->N. Try it out - let me know

Powertrain warranty FTW.

Since you got it might as well use it. SRM always does that especially if you have the habit, like myself, of moving the shifter back and forth in neutral. Take it into the dealership and let them fix it for you. Its SRM trying to be "Too Smart"
