throttle decel delay

After thirsting for a Z all these years, I finally test drove a stick 370 Saturday with three miles on it. I discovered a throttle decel delay of about one second that caused severe lash upon desengagement of the clutch. To drive it correctly, I had to pick up my right foot, then wait patiently for the mill to slow down before I could disengage. I've been working gears since 1960, and I can say that's not the way to shift. How could Nissan field a sports car that doesn't instantaneously respond to the right foot, up and down? I guess I'll have to try another one, or maybe try an automatic (ugh), which would mean no sports package.

You can have an Auto with the Sport Package. There have been some complaints of a throttle delay but it is fixed with an UpRev tune.

It sounds like the issue you are describing stems from the ridiculously heavy flywheel, rather than the throttle delay.


The more noticeable delay is during throttle-on, while the throttle-off delay is more in line with other DBW cars. Swapping for a lighter flywheel will give you a smoother feel and reduce the impact of the issue you describe.

Thank you Number Nine. I've only been to the Nissan site four hundred times, so on the 401st just now, upon your advice, I finally tried checking the auto box! Please, what is an UpRev tune, is it stock, and will it smog in Cali?

And yes, Solid Red is the only way forward!

UpRev is a tune that is normally done by a local Speed Shop. It will not effect emissions at all. Do a search for UpRev on this forum and you will find endless amounts of info.

Any custom tune you do will make it so your car is not CARB-compliant.

The good news it is rarely checked, and you can swap back to a factory map for emissions testing if you want to go that route.

Why does it matter if it holds revs on throttle release? What do you mean by lash? Won't that mean you need to do less heal/toe to rev match your next gear?

I'd be more worried about how slowly the revs go up due to the heavy flywheel.

Doing a UpRev to a stock Z will make it fail an emissions test?

Are you sure it's not the syncro-rev match that's holding the throttle for an extra second? I've turned the feature off in my car since I got it and haven't noticed any sort of delay of the revs going down, not enough to affect my driving anyway. With the feature on the throttle will be blipped every time your shifter enters or exits the gate.

I have turned mine off as well and it's so much better and easier to drive.

damn, I'm not sure how disabling srm could make shifting harder... Are you guys sure you know how it works?

Disabling srm made shifting easier and I think it's easier on gas as well. If only marginally. I don't like that it kept revving all over the place even when I didn't need it. It is convenient when you're feeling lazy though.
