I was shocked the other day to see how many premium oils are now available at Wal Mart. Seems all the majors now have the ultra-premium blends, Wal Mart now even sells Royal Purple.

Default Castrol oils

Many have used Castrol for years in their BMW's and Porsche's but Castrol makes many diffferent oils with different formulas. Many in the German family of cars use Castrol Gold which, is a very good oil and manufactured in Germany but can be found in the U.S. at many stores. It will say manufactured in Germany on the back and does or used to come in a gold container thus the "gold" label. It has performed well in oil analysis over the years and talked about on bobistheoilguy at great length. I have not used it but many I know do and that is the only Castrol that they will use. I am not familiar with Castrol Edge and would do some searches or look on bobistheoilguy. Any time an oil is much cheaper then something else would cause me to think why but many times oils are on promo sales and you can find good deals. Again, the info is out there it just takes time. Remember, compared to the price of our cars all oil and filters are very cheap insurance so look at the issue closely ..However, opinions are like...........

As I said in my first reply, there are numerous opinions. In filters, I would also rate Mobil one extended and Amsoil filters as two of the best. The flow rates are not in question as in the Pure(the bypass valve in the pure has also been called into question for possible freezing and staying open but I think this is rare and have used the filter with good results) however, they are much more expensive. I would also have no problems going with any four or so of the premium synthetics mentioned in this thread. Again, use a good synthetic, very good filter and change it by 5000 and you will be more then fine.....

Default One last thing for the OP

When you said mobile extended, make sure you are talking about mobile 1 extended synthetic and NOT mobile extended service which is not synthetic but says it is good for 5000 miles. Again, there is a whole bunch out there so have fun researching. bobistheoilguy can give you more then you want on oil and filters.

Do you know how the castrol edge oil compares to other oils.

You're right chuck. Ok I will do the seach more about the engine oil and the filter for our z so I don't mess up with it. At dealer they charge too much. Regular plus 60 for exclusive oil for our z. So total around 100. I don't think we can't get better oil on that amount.

Guys I have a question. I went to the dealer and asked about the oil and what is the different about the base oil and the best one they offer additional 60 dollars. The service manager said the best oil almost same like the mobile 1. And the oil have the MS in there. So just wondering what is the MS thing. And they show me 3 filter including the Nissan filter the other 2 is "fram" and "k&n" and the materials they use in the Nissan filter is better than the other filter. And why I asked for advice about the mobile 1 because the service manager said "almost same like the mobile1" that's get into my mind that maybe the mobile1 better than they oil. So what do u guys think?

No, there are threads comparing OEM NIssan filter to others and OEM are not as well made. as oil goes, I'd would for sure buy Redline over M1 ep. Saying that I use M1 EP in my 08 pathfinder, but will only use a Ester based oil like Redline/Motul in my Z. coming soon for another change and that is what is going back in. you get what you pay for and oil is the blood of your engine so I never skimp over that. I mean you pay how much for the car? I say give it what you can. Is it going to blow up if you use somethign other then that, most likely not, but is it as good? that is the question.
Just do some searching man and you'll be able to make your decision on this a little easier.

Why should he do that (unless he's tracking the car)?

I would be interested to hear opinions too. I think I heard someone say its ester based on here.

In my previous car (E46 M3) the factory reccomended oil was Castrol Motorsport 0-60. People always said it was good oil although may be different that "Edge". I wonder if Edge is similarly good. I just started using it in my wifes car (first synthetic oil change) and it uses 5-30 as well. Would be convenient to use the same oil in both cars.
