I'm kinda person barely drive on freeway. Use my car for everyday run on the feeder so stop and go all the time. Please help me out to pick the good engine oil so to keep the life of my engine. Thanks so much guys!!

This is a topic that will go on and on. I would post on bobistheoilguy if you want a breakdown on various oils. All of us have our favorites and reasons for them but that does not make it the right oil for you. I prefer synthetics for its heat tolerances given the Z's high running temps. Most pure synthetics will maintain vis to 400 or over. On the other hand, any good spec oil will most likely do the job if not pushed. I use extended drain intervals on my vehicles but may not when I get my Z because the high temps on the Z would bother me being a tad OCD. Mobile extended is a conventional oil with a tad more additives then their base oil. I would not hesitate to run it 5000 but would not go more and that is on a broken in engine. I would do research on filters as well. Oil is only as good as its' filter. Again, oil is a sacred subject and we all have an opinion. And you know the saying that opinions are like --------, we all have them and they all stink...

Mobil 1 extended performance is their top synthetic oil and is fully synthetic (including its
base). It's a good choice. For filters I would recommend K&N HP-1010 or Purolator Pureone PL14610. These are a little longer than the recommended filters but fit fine.

Is it Ester based?

jpit 04-21-2010 04:07 PM

Mobil 1 is not ester based. Redline is and the partial synthetic Nissan ester has ester additives.

From some internet research along with Redline; Amsoil, Pennzoil Platinum, Royal Purple, Motul 8100 and 300V appear to be fully synthetics with ester in them or made from ester base stocks or something... ester...

I've got PR lined up for my next oil change but reading the UOA's for RP on bitog has me worried... the oil seems to shear...

OP, how many miles do you have? I wouldn't change to synthetic before you hit say 3500/5000 miles

im about to hit 3500 anyway im planning to do the change oil every 3500. so what is the best choice for our z?

I would go with Redline, it's ester based, so group V oil.
I believe Mobile1 EP is group IV or even III.

OP, Xan's giving good advice here, there are reasons why you want to use an ester based oil. Redline is used by heaps people on this forum including the forum owner AK, if you can get your hands on some it would be one of the best choices for your z. No one can really say which is best... you'll start threads that go for 15 pages with name calling and flaming if you ask that type of question too often... The oils I've mentioned in my first post to you are oils within the top end of the motor oils available. There are other good ones as well of course... however, both at this forum as well as the specialist forum of BITOG, redline seems to have an extremely good reputation.

Redline FTW.

Yeah our engine runs pretty hot and Ester's are very shear resistant... Which means it maintains it viscosity at high temperatures...

On the filters, from another post I made earlier;

From what I understand the Puro has a finer filter but this comes at the expense of flow rate (though still within SEA standards). Now the bypass pressure on the Puro is also somewhat higher then the K&N.
So allthough it filters better just from a filter performance point of view and therefore does good in tests, I'm wondering how good it is for our engines, especially when you drive them under high load for a longer time.

I wasn't able to find the exact specs for the two different filters and I don't know if this is correct, but this is what I found for similar filters:

Purolator PureOne PL34631
* Average largest pore size: 42 µm
* Smallest pore size: 10 µm
* 30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 5.3 oz per minute

K&N 3002
* Average largest pore size: 63 µm
* Smallest pore size: 27 µm
* 30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 14.7 oz per minute

So there I would go with either one based on how you drive;
- during break in I would go with a Puro,
- then after if you drive it hard a lot I would use a high flowing K&N
- if you drive more modest I would go with a Puro for filtering more.

These are of course all just my opinions...
