Need your input, thinking of getting Viscous Limited Slip installed

I am thinking of having the Dealer install the Viscous limited slip, but wanted to run it past you all first for your feed back. I know, of course, that had I gotten the sport package this would not be an issue, but when I brought it up to the salesman, he said you don't need it because of the VDC. My fault, not his. It was up to me to research it, and I didn't.

To all Base/Touring Z owners who do not have the Viscous limited slip, how's the Z handle various road conditions regarding one wheel spin/lose traction. Does it effect your driving much?

I don't know if you plan on tracking your car, but if you do you're better off getting an aftermarket VLSD instead of the stock one.

If it's for daily driving only, then I'd say the stock one should hold up fine.

what is he quoting you for that install? dont even bother w/ the viscous crap... get a real diff if you really need one...

Waste of money in my opinion. Go with an aftermarket one for sure. Carbonetic or OS Giken are the favorites for streetability and performance.

Thanks Knives. I am not going to track my Roadster, sure of that. So, When you say "the stock one should hold up fine" are you referring to my stock differential that doesn't have ANY limited slip?

I'm thinking it will cost me about the same as if I bought the whole sport package. But at this point I am trying to decide if I should go with a limited slip, period, of just stay with what I have, which is not much. These Z's are powerful, and I can see how just taking off from a light on wet roads could cause one wheel to spin by itself. But, I do see your point about getting a better after market one if I did do this. I'd need to do my homework THIS TIME! Thanks shabarivas.

Drive it for a while as is and see if it truly bothers you that much.

Yes, I'd need to look into those. Right now I need to decide if I should drive what I have, or make the move now. My Roadster hasn't even been put on the road yet, waiting for the road salt to go, so if I'm going to add limited slip, I'd do it before I actually began driving it.

Honestly, if you've got to ask how the open diff impacts driving dynamics, you probably won't even notice a change at all with any LSD.

I agree with Mike... just live with your choice and drive it around. If you ever get to the point where you feel like the open diff is limiting you, then it's time to look into installing an aftermarket or factory LSD.

That's an option of course, but if I am going to add the limited slip, I'd rather do it now and that will be that. But driving it and see how it handles is probably a smart way to start out. Thanks Bonanni.

I am going to go ahead and say don't do it. Drive your car and if you drive really agressive and find it agonizing that you are always spinning one wheel then switch to an aftermarket LSD. If you drive it normal, or even somewhat agressive, chances are the open diff you have now will not bother you very much.

That does make sense. I should do that before making any moves. I also remember how the old posi traction could get you in trouble on sharp-ish turns if you weren't careful. But over all, that limited slip is hard to beat. But I should drive her and see how things feel. Just from these few posts, I see now that there's other options available to me that may be a better choice than the factory Viscous LSD. That's what's so great about this Forum. Would really like to hear from someone who doesn't have LSD in their Z and get their feelings, but my Z will most likely drive just fine as it. Thanks Bonanni.

I agree with Mike. Unless you are an aggressive driver that likes to go sideways, running track or drag racing I doubt it will bother you. For mundane driving the VDLC takes care of one wheel peel.

Yea, you could leave it an open dif, seeing as you don't plan on tracking your car or doing anything too crazy.

But, if you want to upgrade, I'd still say an aftermarket one is the way to go. Like someone above me said, look into Carbonetic.

There is the warranty issue as well, seeing as a stock one installed by Nissan would be covered. I could care less about warranty, but it is something to consider.
