Pull the front cover off and look at the galley gaskets. You will see the paper gasket pushed out. You can also pull the valve cover and see if you find anything there. I would do all that before I snatched the motor out.

You could also take both bottom oil pans off and spin in some new rod bearings if needed.

Pull the front cover off and look at the gaskets. Then drop the oil pan and look at the bearings. If the gaskets are just leaking. You may get lucky and just change the bearings. If the gaskets are blown out. You might have bigger issues.

Gonna have to start that teardown if you want to know for sure. Yes, the gaskets are up front, but they aren't going to be making the noise. In very casual observation over the years, Cylinder #5 seems to be the most common one to show symptoms first when things go wrong.

What I can tell you is that it didn't help anything revving it up hard to record the noise

Well I’d rather just replace the motor and then I’ll tear down the old motor I just don’t wanna get into a bunch of stuff and regardless I have to replace the motor in the end. Haha

My motor failed earlier this year at the track and its cylinder #5. Was actually wondering if it’s common for this cylinder to go first.

During idle disconnect the ignition coil and the knock should lessen significantly.

Do all years of 370z VQs fit the 2009? I believe updated would have something or at least a sensor different haha. What about g37, q50, will those vq drop in? AWD shouldn’t matter since that’s drive train, just looking to get some info, cleaning garage to get it ready for this uninstall/install. Once again thanks everyone for the quick and knowledgeable replies!

Nice article explaining Rod-knock. Not meant to educate the OP or anything, just for those who need a simple definition.
