Grinding going into second gear

Sounds to me like your synchronizer in 2nd gear and possibly 3rd gear is faulty. Your transmission needs to be overhauled or replaced.

I agree with the clutch pedal adjustment as a first check. Ryan is very specific in his instructions about getting it setup correctly to make sure you can get into all of the gears. If the pedal is out of adjustment, you can completely block a gear or just enough to experience what you're describing.
