Hi all,

My cousin bought his 2009 sport mode 370z new and it has around 20k miles. Just last night he started getting a grind in 5th gear - he is out of warranty. I told him he should look into getting a new transmission which is around $1800. However he really wants to get his current one fixed because he's worried that a replacement will still have the same issue after some time.

So I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. Is a rebuild for a SRM transmission done any differently than a regular manual transmission? Is rebuilding a transmission one of those things that'll give future issues even if it was done right? How involved is it? Does anyone recommend any (specialty) shops he can send his transmission to that will rebuild is transmission properly. I'm worried for him that taking it a local shop will result in them using non-oem parts.

Still trying to sell him on a new unit but the rebuild route would likely save him about $800 and could be as good as new when it's done.

Opening a transmission is like opening a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get. You might have a lot more damage and then your cost will be a lot more than a new one. Tell your cousin to buy a new one and don't skip gears this time.
Oh, and to answer your question, the SRM transmission rebuild process is the same.

I had my transmission replaced twice on my 09 Z under warranty. The first one started to have grinding between 5th and 6th and the second one grinder between 4th and 5th. Even the third one which was the last one I got started to grind again between 4th and 5th by the time I sold it at 74k miles. My thoughts are if it's out of warranty its not worth it to replace. Its just the synchros reacting slower in the high gears idk why it happens. But if you shift slowly and gently enough into those high gears it doesn't grind at all. Or hardly at all. And how many time would you power shift into 5th or 6th? That's like 120ish mph and 145ish mph.. you're rarely at those speeds. So my thoughts are to just leave it alone. It's not that big of a deal.

Find a transmission guru. One in every state. I can't remember but there is one thread on here on someone rebuilding the trans with ford syncro's and loving it, but that cost around 3K to build. Shot peen the gears and and getting better syncro's never hurt

yea, he wants the car to last so he feels if he gets it rebuilt properly, it'll be more robust than a new OEM tranny, which still seem prone to failure
