Did you use ramps? Makes all the difference in the world.

No, I hate the ramps. But if they work for you - more power to you. I wound up putting a jack under the cradle. What a mess.

I've been waiting my whole life to get a hoist at home. Some day.

Dude. The engine is noticeably smoother now. I don't know if it's because of the clean oil, or better oil. Maybe just breaking in a little. It's so f'n nice now.

Hey guys, I've put just under 500 miles on my car since changing the oil for the first time and using Amsoil SS0W-30. Hasn't used ANY oil at all. I changed the oil for the first time at 3,000 miles and I can't lie about it. I drove the car pretty hard during those miles. I used 1 quart of oil during those 3,000 miles. And I still drive my car hard now. So what I guess I'm trying to say is that the Amsoil isn't as volatile as most oils. I will keep checking it and keep everyone informed along the way....

try red line iv heard good things.. just waiting on puttin g it in mine now

Under Body Cover

The under body cover is actually an aerodynamic part. It minimizes the under body turbulance which causes lift. G-coupes, and Z's are zero lift designs. Most high end sports cars have them front and back.

jpit 03-01-2010 12:57 AM

You only have to remove 4 bolts and fold back the cover. The drain plug and filter are easily reached.

zmyride 03-03-2010 02:15 AM

i received the Rhino Blitz Ramp (8000) today. I was excited however i realized there is no way the Z could go up the ramp without the ramp scraping the bottom plastic aero deflector. Even if i remove the aero deflector, the bottom fender looks like it has only 1/4 inch clearance and i have a feeling the fender would get scraped too if i drive the car up.

Now i'm bummed.

supraman626 03-04-2010 04:35 PM

ramps

i think i have the same ones, what i'm planning to do is use wooden boards to go up the ramps. Haven't got a chance to change my oil yet since it's been raining on and off here in san francisco.

Oh noes, more redline showed up at my doorstep! :icon17:

You may be wondering, why K&N again? well, they owed me these filters. I ordred these from K&N last month but thanks to the UPS driver who doesn't care about the rain forecast, left the box outside by the front door . The box and filter soaked in heavy rain :shakes head:. So, I may be utilizing these filters during next few changes. Then, I'll go back to Purolator.

What's wrong with K&N oil filters? :ugh2:

Agreed. It's slightly bigger which makes it perfect IMO. Though there's nothing wrong with K&N even though some will say that their anti drain back valves aren't the best.

on a side note: the guy at the factory who installed my filter must have had a bad day cause that thing was on so tight i had to punture it with a screwdriver to turn it and get it off.

I just changed my oil for the first time today. I only removed the four bolts where the flap is and had plenty of room to do the job. You might want to get a hook strap to keep the flap down and out of the way, especially when draining the oil as it will catch and make a mess!

My filter was also on VERY TIGHT. I could not remove it. I ended up using a Oil Filter Strapped Wrench:

Motion Pro Oil Filter Strap Wrench - Dirt Bike Motocross - Motorcycle Superstore

And it worked great removing the filter without having to puncture it, etc. Thought I would offer that tip for first time oil changes. I don't need to use it after this as I hand tight my filters on and they can be easily removed... :ughdance:

WICKED_GRIN 03-14-2010 08:24 PM

^^ or this...

GA333B, Wrench, Oil Filter, Band w/handles (2 7/8" to 3 1/4" filter diameter)

supraman626 03-15-2010 02:12 PM

damn filter

my oil filter was extremely tight! i tried puncturing it with the screwdriver and it still didn't work and was messy. It will also make the filter oily and slippery. i end up getting a $18 oil filter wrench at kragens a block away. Thank god kragens was nearby! The wrench had a jaw clamp so it worked pretty well. I'm planning to keep this wrench if i ever have to take out another oil filter on a new car.

AK370Z 03-15-2010 08:43 PM

I have been using this one for few years now. Only paid like $5. Works very well.

Changing Engine Oil without Ramps or a Lift

I changed the oil without a lift or ramps—wanted to learn if either were absolutely necessary—and to determine how much oil was actually left in the engine that my oil evacuator could retrieve after I had drained all the engine oil via the oil drain plug. Here is how to do it, and it is not all that much fun unless you are a diehard, BUT it can be done:
  • Your 370Z must not be lowered via suspension mods.
  • The Sports Package front chin spoiler pieces (3) must not be installed.
  • Make sure that your oil catch pan is no higher than 5 1/2".
  • Have the proper size oil wrench or oil end cap filter wrench.
  • You have to remove the lower engine shroud—you cannot use the rear fold-down flap portion as there is simply not enough room for things to happen.
  • A level smooth floor surface is idea.
  • Before shutting down the engine turn the front wheels all the right (passenger's side); this will allow for more room under the 370Z to get the oil filter off and access the oil drain plug.
Findings:
  • After the engine was drained, oil filter removed, filler cap off, and had been sitting for about an hour I was still able to retrieve another 8+ ounces of oil out of the engine with the oil evacuator residing in areas of the oil pan that do not drain out even when the oil plug is removed.
  • I was able to use my torque wrench to properly install the oil drain bolt.
  • Since you cannot see the fastener locations of the lower engine shroud you need to double-check—by feel alone—all the fasteners to insure you have not missed any. I also use a very "low strength threadlock" so that I can easily remove the fasteners and do not have to cinch-down so much into the plastic engine shroud; this is also very good should you actually forget to tighten down a fastener as the fastener will be there the next time you go to remove the shroud.

normally the first oil change to another brand will leave very little of the old oil, not till you do a second oil change will you have all the old oil removed

The tool goes by this name (when I purchased it years ago it was called evacuator) or extractor, here is the one I own (you can find the very same model elsewhere, but cheaper): Oil Extractor

Have heard of these. Always wondered how much oil they left in the pan. But, after hearing that when you drained the oil through the oil plug, and there was STILL 8 oz. left in the pan, AND that you got that 8 oz. out with the extractor, then it seems that the extractor removes more oil than a straight oil drain though the plug! And that don't make sense. But if it is, it is. How about some clarity on this?
