Shift knob not survived

I have seen a few people claim they got theirs off without completely trashing it although I am not sure I believe them. Lol Mine looked even worse than yours

Mine did come off without a hitch or any much effort whatsoever. I did use a strap wrench tho but I just gave it a good twist and came right off.
And yes, after hearing all the horror stories similar to OP's I thought I was gonna shred my knob to pieces.

Guess you got lucky and there wasn't a ridiculous amount of Loctite on it.
