To state it simply.....The floating rotors are made and designed to be able to move (float) when the heat builds up in the rotor. As the heat builds up in the rotor the metal expands. A floating design will allow the rotor some room for expanding when hot and contracting back when cooled.
With a fixed or a solid mounted rotor, there is no room for the expanding and contracting movements that the rotor will go through during its heating up and cooling down cycles. Because of this a non-floating or fix mounted rotor is prone to warping much easier than a floating rotor. Floating rotors usually last a little longer as well because of this.
