To clean around the boots and pistons. Use a nylon tooth brush and brake cleaner. You only need a thin layer of grease on the skims. Too much causes a mess and catches dirt.

If you use the anti-squeal as mention. Don't put it on too thick. It will cause other problems with brake pedal feel.
