Default iPhone 5 integration help

Hey guys, did some searching but not much turned up. Has anyone been able to figure out any possibilities for integrating the iPhone5 with a 2009 OEM Nav system? I have been trying but cant figure anything out audio wise. I want to be able to stream music again via the iphone spotify/pandora apps but cant with a 5.

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated. I think newer Z's have a newer OEM Nav system which leaves us 09 guys basically in the past with almost an archaic system and no updates.

Thanks!

Found this buried in another thread:

iphone 5 and 2009 370z

Basically, if you have an '09 (like me) you are stuck with the firmware originally loaded into the unit. If you have an '10 or later, there are updates to the system. Very, very frustrating but Nissan seemed to have no interest whatsoever in supporting our system.
Meaning, I think you're SOL, unfortunately. I could be wrong though.
It`s Z Time and DEpointfive0 like this.

Thanks for the thread! Just read through it and I agree I am most likely SOL unless I plug it into the aux jacks... I will try some methods and see what I can do.

thanks again!

Where are the AUX jacks in the '09?

I'll be interested to see if the later-model Nissan Nav systems can be firmware updated to utilize CarPlay. So far, Nissan isn't even out of the gate with CarPlay on any of their OEM Nav system head units.

The iPod/iPhone port and aux rca's are located in the center armrest area.

You will have to remove the extra cup holder in place IF you have one by pulling it up and out of the way.

I have had EXTENSIVE dealings with the iPod interface in the 09 Z.

2009 370Z IPOD -> A2DP Bluetooth Unit

The Z's that are equipped with the 30 pin iPod adapter communicate with the audio system via UART communication with the following configuration:
  • 19200bps
  • 8 data bits
  • 1 start/stop bit
  • no flow control

The 30 pin connector has both UART and USB interfaces available. It appears that the new lightning connector only has USB support. The interesting thing, however, is that the protocol sent over the UART is the same for USB.

So theoretically, if the USB interface was converted into a UART interface with the above specs, the communication between the iPhone 5 and the 09Z iPod adapter would be possible.

What is needed is something like this:

that has adaption from USB to UART.

If there is interest in this kind of adaption, I can try to take a closer look and try some experiments.

IIRC, it requires a special cable to go from the car to a standard iPhone/iPod 30-pin connector. That could be a problem since there are some issues with data compatibility when using a 30-pin to Lightning connector that the iPhone 5 requires. Some of those non-Apple adapters don't work so well.

Yes that is correct.

The only issue now is that you would also need two converters

1. A converter for it to actually charge like the original iPhone 4

2. A second one to change the old style connector to the NEW lightning connector

This is how I use mine and I have not had an issue so far.

Didn't know there was another option since 09

But that looks like it would do the same thing Im doing now going thru two converters.

Default Digging a bit deeper

It looks like there is a product that does the conversion from Lightning to RS-232 already.

Lightning Serial Cable for iOS

If it supports the sync bytes that are needed to talk to the Z, it will translate the USB communication from the Lightning connector to the UART communication the car needs. I emailed them asking if it supports this. I will post their response. Using this adapter, or building one like it, it should be very straight forward to get iPhone 5 devices talking to the car like other older iDevices with the 30 pin connector.

OK this is what I used.

1. Amazon.com: ViseeO Tune2air WMA1000: Cell Phones & Accessories This adapter connects your iDevice to BT and streams audio and Metadata and doesn't sound half bad. AND it doesn't interfere with BT Handsfree/headset in the car.
2. Amazon.com: CableJive dockStubz+ Charge Converter and 30-pin Pass Through Adapter for iPhone, iPod, and iPad: Electronics This adapter allows you to power on the BT adapter when the car powers on.
PS: The photo for item 2 is not correct, the photo doesn't show the mini-USB jack that is on the left side of the adapter.
3. I used a 12V to 5V charge adapter into the mini-USB connector on the side of item 2. This allows the radio to "See" the BT adapter as ON when radio is powered up.

This setup works flawlessly for me. Maybe 1 time out of 25 the radio doesn't see the adapter. I use my iPhone 5 and 5S with this no problemo. Metadata and music, the radio thinks it's an iDevice.

I looked into this adapter for a LONG time before building my own interface. I kept reading how it was flaky, poor audio, intermittent connection, and no metadata. Granted, this was for a wide range of makes and models.

For the 2009 370Z with Nav, are you able to:
  1. Get artist name on screen?
  2. Get song name name on screen?
  3. Get album name name on screen?
  4. Get track number name on screen?
  5. Get track elapsed time name on screen?
  6. Auto connection?
  7. Control from steering wheel?

Have you ever tried it with an Android device running Android 4.3 or higher? (In Android 4.3, AVRCP 1.3 was implemented with allows for metadata)

The secret is to supply power to it the instant the radio is on. The radio expects a battery powered device that can Ack the instant the radio queries iOS idps. Without the mini-USB port supply power from a 12 to 5V dc connector to the BT A2DP adapter, the radio never sees it on power up.

For the 2009 370Z with Nav, are you able to:
  1. Get artist name on screen? Yes
  2. Get song name name on screen? Yes
  3. Get album name name on screen? Yes
  4. Get track number name on screen? Yes
  5. Get track elapsed time name on screen? Yes
  6. Auto connection? Yes

No I don't like Android music apps, but I do like Android. I've got a Galaxy Nexus with 4.3. Per reviews the BT device doesn't do Metadata over Android A2DP yet.
