How are you tapping the mirror wires? Invisicord? Sounds to me that the circuit, for whatever reason, isn't able to deliver enough current to boot the detector.... My best guess

Sounds to me that the circuit, for whatever reason, isn't able to deliver enough current to boot the detector.... My best guess is that you are getting poor contact trying to tap the mirror wires.
