Default Wiring Problems

I'm trying to tap an rj11 phone cable into a 2009 Touring 370Z rearview mirror to run my mirror mount Bel Magnum radar detector.
When the wires are connected, the detector doesn't switch on, but makes a constant clicking sound.
What am I doing wrong?
Please Help.

Pinout for the connector should be in the FSM. Double-check your wiring.

If you didn't use the proper tool to makeup the RJ-11 connector, you probably screwed it up.

Hey, thanks for your help SouthArk.
The Rj-11 is wired up Ok as it works fine on the interior lights or the main lights or even direct to the battery.
It's when I connect to the power rear view mirror that all I get is clicking from the detector, as if not enough power to switch the detector on fully.
Unfortunately the FSM that I have doesn't have any wiring diagrams and I can't find any on the net either!

Check the voltage at the mirror connector (unplugged) and at the detector (plugged in).

Hey, thanks again for your input SouthArk.

I've tested the voltage on the mirror and it's the same as the interior and mood lighting. This is why I'm completely stumped.
The detector works with the mood light, but you need your lights on for that to work, and it works with the interior lights but stays on permanently and doesn't switch off with the ignition.

I'd measure the voltage at the detector. My guess is that you are not tapped into a 12V line or the load of the detector is pulling more current than the wiring can handle causing the voltage to drop when the detector is turned on.

I vaguely remember there being a thread on here about someone doing something similar. Use any of the major web search engines and add "site:the370z.com" to your search string.

The ground wire that is in the harness probably is not good enough for the detector. I would try a solid metal location.

Thanks again for your input SouthArk, even though I've been through the internet I'll give your suggestion of the site:the370z.com a trolling aswell.

Also like to thank bigaudiofanat for his suggestion. I'd already tried that one though and it made no difference.

Actually. come to think of it, I believe your radar has a transformer inside the cig plug. So it would make sense why your not able to power it up. You either need the hard wire kit or tear apart the cig plug and hard wire the chip into your mirror.

Yeah that would make sense, but how come it still powers up if I wire it to the interior lights or the little orange mood light??

Hard wiring the detector up by the mirror using an Rj-11 without running the cable through the headliner and down pillars. If I connect it to the little orange mood light it only powers up when the park or headlights are turned on. If I connect it to the interior lights the power is there constantly and not turned on and off with the ignition. BUT, when I try to wire it to the powered interior mirror, it doesn't power up it just keeps clicking, even though the voltage is the same.

How are you tapping the mirror wires? Invisicord?

Sounds to me that the circuit, for whatever reason, isn't able to deliver enough current to boot the detector.... My best guess is that you are getting poor contact trying to tap the mirror wires.
