Are you familiar with what amplifier clipping sounds like? Coil over-travel is the mechanical equivalent of that. It doesn't sound exactly the same (you only have physical contact on the inward stroke) but similar.
There are a few other things that could cause similar sounds but they usually make buzzing/grating/other noises: Breaks/tears in the coil assembly, cone, or suspension. If you have been banging the coil against the frame, any of those could be damaged. Check the wires from the terminals to the cone and make sure they aren't hitting anything and are still glued to the cone (latter will usually have an effect at lower volume levels, also).
