Well doughnut is the correct way till someone got lazy 100 years ago and started using donut for the food. Seeing how cars started using spares less then 100 years ago, we Americans started using the shorter term donut because we're so lazy. But since a spare is not a food it could be donut. Both were originally meant in there beginning for the food so both are technically wrong. Since doughnut was here first, and meant for food, I guess donut makes the most sence to use for the spare tire.
