Default OEM RE050A Life Span

I would really appreciate if somebody can provide me any input on whether this is considered normal wear on the rear tire for this car (see attachment). I have just over 30K miles running still on the OEM 19" sports tires. I use a separate set of snow tires in the past 2 winters. As you can see from the photo, the outer edge of the tire has worn out much more than the inner side. All four tires are like that. Does that mean my alignment is way off?

The tire tread depth of both rear tires were measured at 3/32 ~1000 miles ago when I had the services. Can anybody give me any suggestion whether I need to change the tires immediately or not? I can sorta feel some loss of traction when the road is very wet. Thanks.

At 3/32 you're pretty close to needing new ones. An alignment earlier in the life of the tires might have helped even out the wear. But at this point, that money is better spent on an alignment after new tires. I recommend new tires, then an alignment. You probably don't need them absolutely immediately, but you definitely don't want to be in an accident with bald tires. FWIW, I am very pleased with the Nitto Invo wet weather performance.

Thanks for the prompt response. Yes, I do understand that I need the alignment done once I swap the new tires on. I already bought two rear Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I just kinda want to get my money worth it with these OEM tires since they're ~$350 a pop. My front ones were measured at 4/32. Should I change them the same time I change the rear ones?

One last thing, do you see the similar wearing pattern on your tires? Meaning the outside wears more than the inside? I have not tracked my car yet, so no aggressive turning from my part at this point.

I'd check the toe settings. Looks like what happened to my front tires. When I had an alignment done the front was toed out beyond spec.

I took my Z to a large empty parking lot early Saturday morning and got a lot of use out of the parking brake before getting the tires replaced that day I typically wear out the rear tires every 6 months, and the fronts every 12 months. But I often still have 7/32 tread on the front when the rears go. At 4/32, I would recommend that you have the fronts replaced at the same time and always with matching tires.

I do plenty of aggressive driving and casual driving. My tire wear is very even because I have a five year alignment agreement from NTB (for the cost of about 2.5 individual alignments). I get my car aligned about every quarter, although I'm behind this year. Thanks for reminding me

Strangely, Nissan Maintenance Plus Gold package doesn't even cover alignment, which I consider a rip-off. They charged me for $850 up front for 6 oil changes, 2 in-cabin filter, 1 or 2 rotation I forgot (which is useless for Z anyway). I can't even get a transmission oil done for free. Ridiculous!! What's that NTB alignment package you're talking about?

You should be able to go to just about any tire shop that does alignments (NTB, Firestone, etc..) and ask them about a lifetime or multiple year package. Sometimes you can even haggle with them over the price.

To me, the outside of the tire is not too worn as it is only on the extreme outer edge. If the alignment was way off, the tire would be worn more on the FACE of the tire. It looks like the tire is rolling when you corner, and the outer edge is slightly worn. I would make sure that the tire pressure is up to the manufacturer's specifications. Also, as the tire wears, the sidewall gets less firm, causing the tires to "roll" more. I hope that I can get that kind of mileage on my OEM tires. At 16,000 miles, there is still plenty of tread left, so, hopefully they get me through this season.

It's not critical, but you do need to change them soon. I'd say another 3,000-4,000 miles. That wear pattern isn't too bad for that much mileage. It's really more than most people get out of them actually. That wear pattern looks like the tires were underinflated. Unless the alignment is really off, that's usually what happens. The inner shoulder shows more wear than the center also.

Tire pressure should be around 35-36psi. I think Nissan recommends 35psi.

We got about 30K out of the front RE050A's, but my WIFE got less than 10K out of the rears (her DD, I was romping on it during the weekends). I drive it much harder than she ever did as a DD, and I still romp on it on the weekends when I can. I get nearly 20K out of the rears now

Well, I'm 100% certain they are properly inflated.

Yes, those are the stock 19" RE050A's. Like I mentioned in the opening post, I used snow tires during the past two winters. From my calculation, I have got 24k miles out of the RE050A at this point (my car has 32k miles). Interestingly, from what I read, most people on this board actually do not get this much mileage out of RE050A. This is the first sports car I ever own. I have always run on all-seasons for my sedan in the past, so getting 24k out of a set of tires seems kinda low to me originally.

With that being said, I have never tracked my car yet, only some spirited driving on the highway occasionally, and I usually don't do hard acceleration and braking. Maybe that's why they still have 3/32 left.

I bought two Michelin PSS for the rear already. Have heard some very good reviews on those.

now, that isn't too bad, I have 25K on mine and going to replace with either PSS or RE-11s
but I did do a lot of highway driving when I first got the car, driving it less, but still hard.....
