Anyone ever Plastidip wheels before?

Anyone ever done this before? Seems safe and easy to test out with the 18" Enkei wheels.

SolidKatfish 07-15-2011 08:08 AM

Please someone comment, interested as well.

Im not sure what he just did, I mean, what did he do? hehe. It was like the video went from Before and After..:shakes head:

zZSportZz 07-15-2011 10:45 PM

Unless I stroked out during the vid, I saw no one actually apply anything to the
wheels...

Allstock 07-15-2011 11:02 PM

You spray it on like spray paint minus the prep work. Peel it off if you don't like. Not much to it. I used both black and white plastidip on my rims. http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/...-/43b657fc.jpg

djpathfinder 07-16-2011 12:20 AM

I'm tempted to plastidip something too. It's so cool and removable whenever you want.

Boost_lee 07-16-2011 03:46 AM

what colors are readily available?

MnTBlitz 07-16-2011 09:11 AM

Looks like they have them in Black, White, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Clear.

I don't see why it wouldn't be safe to use on the fangs, rear valance, and door handles.
And when you get tired of it, you can just remove it. This is definitely intriguing,
Nice find, +1 for you Masa. :tiphat:

Boost_lee 07-16-2011 02:06 PM

My thoughts exactly. I want to redo my rear valance. Who knows, I can rock different colored wheels for few weeks lol

Well, since I was unable to attend the Mid-A cruise this morning due to family engagements, afterwards I decided to try out plasti dip for myself. See for yourselves.

The cool part is it works as advertised, if you somehow miss taping off a part it just peels right off without harming the clear coat. :happydance:

jayl 07-16-2011 02:53 PM

This is a great find!! +1

I definitely want to do it.. would be great to do a group plastic dip !

I have a PG, so if I can find a gun-metal finish that would be great... I would like to do the wheels / nissan logo ... maybe 370 and the door handles

MnTBlitz 07-16-2011 03:03 PM

Wow Masa, Looks awesome, Great job!

b1adesofcha0s 07-17-2011 03:12 PM

Awesome job man, will definitely have to try this out some day

Same here, gun metal would be awesome.

ducky 07-17-2011 03:39 PM

me and my friends was using the plastic dips last week to do their m3's..came out pretty nice..

b1adesofcha0s 07-17-2011 03:39 PM

Looks like they have a create your own color kit, but it might be kind of hard to get it gun metal. Ron, did you use just the black or did you use the clear as well? I'm assuming using the clear gives it a glossy finish?

Do you have any :pics:

SolidKatfish 07-17-2011 04:02 PM

^ he was actually at my job doing the work. He didn't use any clear coat with the black paint he used.

Cool, thanks. Do you know if using the plasti dip clear will give a gloss finish? If it does I might try using it to black put my roof.

Hey Shahid, like Kenny said, I just used three coats of the plastidip. The finished product has a satin sheen/finish to it - pretty close to how the black parts on our front grille look.

Adding clear to the top will def give it a hi gloss look. Let me know when you are up to do the roof, I am down to help and doucment

I def. want to do these to my wheels, the fact that there is no prep and you can peel it off without ruining anything just makes it that much more tempting.

Will do man! Read somewhere on line that the plasti dip clear is not a clear coat, its just the same as the others but with no color. Do you think a regular clear coat would work well with the black plasti dip?

I want to try it out on my rear valence and fangs first. Then maybe roof and wheels. Where did you buy it from and for how much?

SolidKatfish 07-17-2011 04:34 PM

Honestly I really don't know. I'm wondering myself if adding clear coat would affect the drying of the plasti dip in any way. Might wanna do a search on that.

After a little research it seems using a clear coat with the plasti dip makes it harder while drying and a lot more difficult to remove. :(

leighspped 07-17-2011 04:45 PM

I'm worried about how'd they look after a few car washs or when u need to change tires... Any thoughts?

I read that its durable enough to go through car washes. Even if it doesn't last, you can always re-apply it I guess.

I got it at Lowe's for around 5 dollars and some change per can. Rear valence only took little more than half a can with 3 coats. If you plan to do fangs + valence then two cans should be more than enough.

b1adesofcha0s 07-17-2011 05:02 PM

I guess we can always just try doing the roof in flat black and see how it looks, If its bad It can always be removed. Maybe just one layer of clear applied after the plasti dip dries will be ok? The info that I read used 3 layers.

How ling does the whole process (masking, application, drying) take? I'm down to do it next Saturday, but I have a wedding to go to around 7-8 pm. If we can be done before then next Saturday will be good (July 23rd). We can do fangs + valence or try experimenting with the roof.

It only took me and Solid Katfish around 45 mins to do the rear valence. That included taping the area off and applying 3 coats. We did however have a giant shop fan blowing on the car between layers so that probably sped things up quite a bit :rofl2:

Saturday morning is good for me but Solid Katfish will be on vacation that weekend so we won't have access to the shop. :shakes head:

We can do it outside as long as the weather is nice and sunny to help dry the stuff off or we can wait until he gets back so we can use the shop. Your call.

b1adesofcha0s 07-17-2011 06:19 PM

Let's go for next Saturday. I will be in NY the weekend after and after that I will need to find time to get my tail lights painted.

Here's some more reading and pics of the stuff in action.

This guy actually did his entire G35 in plasti dip and rode around in it for a while before peeling it off.
