So I found out at the wedding today that one of my cousins has a hook up at a bish shop in VA. Gonna see how that works out for the roof

Hey Ron, thanks for emailing me that video, it looks pretty cool. But I think Im gonna hold off, I wanna see if you guys are still happy with this stuff, and it doesnt mess up your paint in anyway, once people start removing it after a few months or longer period of time.

What parts of your car are you thinking of using it on? Your options are kind of limited with having a black car.

I could do the lower rear where the exhausts are, and the front fangs in red, i think that would look pretty hott.

white rims on a blue z is going to look beastly, the only reason I didn't get white rims was the fear of how often I was going to have to clean them.

Did you buy clear coat spray or did you buy clear plasti dip? There is a big difference between the two. We tried putting clear coat on plasti dip this past Saturday and it makes it MUCH harder to remove. It's not impossible, but will take a lot longer and be more of a PITA. The clear coat will make it look more glossy, but don't expect anything amazing IMO. If your going to try though, definitely let us know how it goes.

Also, clear plasti dip is just that. It's not a clear coat, just plasti dip rubber with no color to it. If you put that over the white plasti dip, it won't do anything but add another layer of rubber on top and will probably make the white look worse. Before you do any of this, do what I did. Test it out on something other than your car first. After that, test it on a small part of your car. You could try doing like one spoke of one wheel or something. This way you can find out what works and what doesn't. It would be a lot easier to pull the plasti dip off one spoke than an entire wheel.

Good luck with the project man

An idea Amar had was to do the side mirrors if anyone is interested in that.

jayl 07-25-2011 01:18 PM

i dont think I want to do the whole car for now.. but maybe start with the wheels...Just not sure how blk would look on PG

b1adesofcha0s 07-25-2011 01:24 PM

Search around, I've seen it before on the base wheels and its not bad.

We tried doing the roof today, but it didn't turn out so good. The plasti dip itself was find if you want a matte finish, but I wanted a glossy finish. When we tried putting on the clear coat, it left a white residue when it dried so we decided to just take it all off. I think it might have been like that because it was too hot outside while we were doing it. The can said to use only up to temperatures of 90*, but it was definitely 100*+ out today. We will try doing it again some other time in Solid Katfish's shop to get some better results. If that doesn't work, I will just do the wheels and get vinyl for the roof.

Here are the pics I took. The last two pics show the clear coat we tried. We only put the clear on a small strip on the right side of the roof just to test it out.

Hey, please keep us update on how your roof hold up against the weather as I'll do the same:tiphat:

b1adesofcha0s 07-25-2011 01:39 PM

I took the plasti dip off as soon as we were done putting it on. Couldn't get the glossy finish I wanted.

eastwest2300 07-27-2011 05:10 AM

That'll be the very last option, my buddy that I sold my motorcycle to, that is mechanically inclined will hopefully do it for me. we'll see though.

Did you paint the inside barrels too?

Z-ELVIS 07-28-2011 03:34 PM

The black finish

Has anyone tried putting armorall on the rims for a more glossy look.
Has anyone tried to wax or polish the matte finish?

Billy

atl370z 07-28-2011 03:47 PM

Tried clear coat, but that's about it. Didn't work out.

SolidKatfish 07-28-2011 04:34 PM

I plasti dip my friends wheels yesterday and it turned out good. But if you want that gloss look you might want to go with regular paint.

Yea I can assist you. I experienced some of the problems we might in counter.

buddahson 07-29-2011 03:18 PM

Has anyone tried painting over the plastidip? I would like to try painting my rims a Dark grey. I was thinking a couple coats of black plastidip fully dried followed by a couple of coats of a Dark Grey spray paint. Do you think you would still be able peel off the base coat of plastidip effectively removing the top coat as well? I may give it a shot on something other than my car this weekend.

b1adesofcha0s 07-29-2011 03:33 PM

I think it might be possible but it would be a lot harder. You would probably need several layers of plasti dip to make it easier to take off.

Dude, I think doing that, you're gonna have a serious mess on your hands, definitely experiment on something first before you touch the Z, just my 2 cents.

buddahson 07-30-2011 08:54 AM

Ok, I'm in the process of test painting a bucket lid now. I did three coats of black plastidip as my base. Now I'm painting over it. We'll see how it goes.

eastwest2300 07-30-2011 11:27 AM

Take pictures, so we can all see..

Really nice! How many cans you used for 4 wheels?

Just did my emblems last night. They turn out great!

FYI, the paint over plastidip idea was a failure. It looks fine but is very difficult to remove. I highly recommend against doing anything similar.

Yup, we found out the hard way when we did b1ades roof with clear coat.

RandyD 08-10-2011 03:39 PM

eastwest2300 08-10-2011 05:32 PM

I wanna see more pics of this stuff, come on guys..post up pics, please.

3SeventyZ 08-11-2011 07:35 AM

going to give this a try today

curious to see how it turns out

Dzel 08-12-2011 06:28 PM

When you guys did your wheels did you remove the tires and stems or did you just take them off the car and painted them?

cevans87 08-21-2011 11:52 PM

Masa, I see you are from Annapolis. Do you by any chance have the black fang delete on your 370? I'm pretty sure I've seen you on my commute to Alexandria on 50. I drive a red 09 370z with the black fang and black rear valence.

Anyway, I'm actually considering plastidipping my emblems in a few weeks after reading one of the threads about it recently.

I used to have black fangs and rear valence using the plastidip but I got tired of it after a couple weeks then peeled it off again, the best part about the product itself. You can always switch up if you get tired of the look. :icon17:

I plan to plastidip my wheels sometime in the near future just to see if I want to go through with powder-coating - sort of like window shopping before making the final purchase.

edit: Don't you just love that stretch of Rt. 50 between Annapolis and D.C.? It's like the autobahn - if you aren't going 90mph someone is gonna run you off the road!

tonybui 08-28-2011 11:57 PM

How long would it last on wheels?? I'm so tempted
