So Ron, what time do you think we should start. I'm thinking like 9-10 AM would be good. I'm going to go to Lowe's to get a can of plasti dip and a can of clear coat and try to experiment to see if it will work. |

Depending on the weather when I get out of work today I might try my luck on the rear valance. I will post pics. The hardest part is trying to figure out how to leave the paint with a clean cut edge. When you start pulling the painters tape off it likes to take the paint with. I have a few ideas that I'm going to look into. |

oooh very cool, depending on the results I might have to see what my wheels would look like in white! I like how its not permanent and so far doesn't seem to damage painted surfaces.
|
Jay if the full car plasti dip goes well, I might try that one day too. It could work like vinyl and help protect the paint.
Amar might bring his Viper ;) |
Yeah thats what i was thinking depending on how exactly the clear plastidip is, screw getting a 3m Clear bra, just plastip dip the front.
Even when you go on long road trips you could just spray a clear coat on it rather than using the blue painters tape :roflpuke2: |

True, I was just throwing it out there for the people that do use the painters tape.
Not saying that theres anything wrong with using the painters tape:ugh2: |
guys just remember if and when need to peel this off to not use a power wash like he did

So I've been doing some experimenting with plasti dip and clear coat at home. Bought a can of each and have been trying it out on one of my old dumbbells. Put 3 layers of plasti dip on each side and a layer of clear coat on one side. The side with just plasti dip peeled off easily. The side with the clear wasn't hard to peel off, but there was definitely a difference in how the material felt and how it peeled off. It did give it a lot more of a glossy finish. I added another coat of clear on top of the first one to see how many coats we can do before it becomes too difficult to remove.
Ron, any idea how many cans I will need to buy? Doing fangs, rear valence, and roof with plasti dip and also using clear coat for the roof. I have some pics of my experiment that I will post once I'm done. |

1 can each for valence and fangs will be more than enough (4 coats). Not sure about the roof, I would say at least 2 to be safe. The roof and rear valence will be pretty easy to do, the fangs will be a little time consuming because of all the crevices. When I mean time consuming, I mean masking off the areas, the actual painting will be very very easy since it requires no prep at all. |

Looks like we're good with the clear coat on the plasti dip. Now to be clear, I applied 3 layers of plasti dip and let each layer dry in between. Then I added the layers of clear coat after the plasti dip dried. I don't know if this is the correct way to do it or not. Should I try applying the clear coat while the plasti dip is still wet for a better gloss effect? Still have a few more days to experiment before it goes on the car.
The plasti dip does still come off after the clear coat, but it is more difficult to get it off. Not impossible, but for a large area like the roof, it might take a while. Should be easier since we will wax the car before hand. However, I have not yet tested it after long term drying/hardening. For anyone that wants to come watch, PM myself or Masa your number so we can give you the address. We would like to meet at 9 AM to get started. |
I've changed my mind about doing the rear valence, I think it looks better in PG. Starting to rethink the fangs too. I think I will do the fangs and roof for now and if I don't like them I can just take them off.
We're still aiming for 9 AM this Saturday, but if it is raining we will have to reschedule. |

Roof will be really easy to do, fangs will take the most part masking off. If you guys want to see the video of me peeling it off, PM me your email and I can forward it to you, it is in .MOV format. |
Might try wheels at some point too. Would wheels take a long time to do? If not, we could do those on Saturday too.

looks very nice!!.
I have to work saturday starting at 8 am.. should be done by 11 but you never know.. I will still like to come check out the work if you guys are still around by the time I am off work. good luck for saturday! |
Does anyone know where to buy the white and red plastic dip spray? I checked a homedepot and lowes, they only offer it in matted black
|
Might be able to find it online. I know I saw them on Amazon.
Also, I think I will only do the roof tomorrow morning. How many cans of plasti dip and clear will be good for the roof? |

I hope it looks good because it's going to be a PITA to take off with the clear coat. |
i would try it on my wheels just for fun but i wonder if its gonna leave the inner barrels all dirty with particles of plastic from the spray
|
Ok I've got my car washed and my roof waxed. I may be there closer to 10 am depending on what time I get back from this wedding. I also have to go to work at 2 am for like an hour :(

Im still very hesitant about this stuff.. |
Hey Ron, it looks like I will be there closer to 10 am than 9 am. Just got home from work so I'm trying to get a little more sleep, lol.

Just Plasti dip my rims couple days ago. Now that I know the car looks good with black wheels, I can start saving my $$$ for some new rims:tup:

We tried doing the roof today, but it didn't turn out so good. The plasti dip itself was find if you want a matte finish, but I wanted a glossy finish. When we tried putting on the clear coat, it left a white residue when it dried so we decided to just take it all off. I think it might have been like that because it was too hot outside while we were doing it. The can said to use only up to temperatures of 90*, but it was definitely 100*+ out today. We will try doing it again some other time in Solid Katfish's shop to get some better results. If that doesn't work, I will just do the wheels and get vinyl for the roof.
Here are the pics I took. The last two pics show the clear coat we tried. We only put the clear on a small strip on the right side of the roof just to test it out. |
First I did four coats and went back two more for touch ups. The whole paint job I'll give 7/10. It looks fine, but could certainly be better.
|
I think it was the high humidity that may have caused us a little trouble. Next time we certainly have to be more aggressive with the coats but overall the roof looked fine if it was going to stay matte finished.
