Well this is an extremely interesting thread as I to have already had one crack. Bought the car, rear wheel had a small rash spot on it from some novice drivers test drive, other than that the car is clean at 120 miles, so dealer says they will have it repaired. Get the car back with the locking lug broken exactly like the pics on page , needless to say I am piissd, dealer replaces the lugs with a new set, but now I've got to find out if they are the wrong ones.

BTW, does anyone know if the Projectkics Caliber 24 lugs are a correct fit for the 370 lugs, every place I've looked has S2000 and RSX fitment.

I'd get on their *** for being non-compliant to their own problem that was published by Nissan.

kannibul 07-01-2009 01:54 PM

Nissan had notified the dealers to use the wrong part for the wheel locks.

They have posted a service bulletin about it - notify the dealer about this, and if they're worth their salt, they should contact other people who have bought one to have them bring it in so they can swap the locks out for the correct ones...

MacDaddy 07-01-2009 02:31 PM

So I'm back from the dealer, let see if I can find the smiley for the looks on their faces when I brought this up.......or maybe.......they had no clue!!!!! Interesting, the owner of the dealership was in his office with the sales manager, so we had a talk.....over 20 370Z's sent out with the wrong locks on them and they had 2 on the lot with the wrong ones. I'll have to wait until Friday to get the right ones but I got the standard lugnuts so I can at least drive the car.

Thanks again everyone and get the word out!!!!!

At least your dealer listened to you. Both sales and service department laughed at my face and degraded me to the lowest level when I told them they were installing the wrong wheel locks. Note this was before AND after the Nissan service bulletin went out. Anyways, I contacted Nissan corporate directly and the dealer is now refunding me my $$$ for the wheel locks that they never installed in the first place.

They did send out a bulliten explaining what locking lugs where the correct ones to use and why. Proabably a couple weeks ago it went out.

Lug nut explode

I just bought a new blue touring sport 7AT. I drove home and the anti theft lug nuts exploded. This just sucks I live 50 miles from the dealer.

Warning: Your dealer is incompetent. (Considering that Nissan issued a TSB to all its dealers warning them of this issue. Seems the people at your dealership are either too stupid or too lazy to read.)

Add me to the list of incorrect wheel locks. Dealer was totally oblivious to the situation.......

That is just absurd.

cjof2003 09-21-2009 10:16 PM

Wow this is crazy that dealerships are clueless, lets hope they aren't anymore.
If I were you guys I'd just get the money back anyways, wheel locks are annoying and barely even slow down/inconvenience a thief.
I know this first hand as I lost the key to my locks for my RSX and quickly found a way to get them all off in less than 5 minutes with NO special tools.

LunaZ 05-28-2010 11:01 PM

Broken locking lugnut for me too! Made my brake rotor install tonight a little more interesting.
Ordered a set of the McGard 21153's from Summit Racing (McGard 21153 - McGard Wheel Locks - Overview - SummitRacing.com) before I realized Courtesy had the right part now from Nissan.
From what I read in the other thread about the locking lugnuts, the McGrad part should work just fine.

Belsavis 06-05-2010 08:54 PM

Yep, wrong ones installed on mine and one broke too. Took dealer all day to replace but they did it at no charge and now the correct ones are on.

bullet1 08-27-2010 07:40 AM

Glad I found this thread. I didn't realize until after the dealer said they broke a locking lug when they took off my wheel (One wheel had curb rash when I bought the car and they replaced it). So they replaced the one with a stock lug. Then I came here and found the issue. Today I had them replace the rest of the 3.

They had no idea that there were 370's out there with incorrect lugs on them. Then a tech came by and he knew about the problem. Luckily only 1 out of the 4 broke when taking off.

I had one of my locking lugs break just like this. Tires were being replaced by an installer that I've known and trusted for 20 yrs. I called to check on the progress and was told that one nut had broken and there was another that had a slight rust ring @ the top 3rd of its shaft (looks exaclty like the broken one in the photo). Drove to the Nissan dealer in Greenville for replacements and was given a set that was shouldered (bell-shaped flange). These were $55 and the service manager tried to deny that the factory ones are defective. What a piece of work this woman is. At least the defective ones are replaced w/ the correct ones now. I'd hate to have to deal w/ this on the side of the road.:shakes head:

jloomis13 10-05-2010 08:51 AM

I'm having the same issue...turns out the dealer in Atlanta where I flew to get the car installed the locks for the 350z. My local tire guy WHO I TRUST COMPLETELY tried to balance the tire and broke the first one he tried to take off. Then, he took the others off and they were full of rust. I called the local Nissan dealer this morning and was told that Nissan won't do anything about this since it wasn't factory installed and was an option and that the rust could have been caused by road conditions. GET REAL PEOPLE!! My car has just over 6k miles on it and had NEVER even been in the snow!

went to the dealer before i was pointed the direction of this thread. they ordered me a new set, but now im wondering if they ordered the wrong ones. im gonna see their attitude when i try to "fill them in" on this because i know for a fact they have no idea.

they felt like they were on there hand tight. one broke as i just started tightening it. noticed the hairline crack on the other before i installed. the two on the front are on, but now that i know they arnt really doing anything, i think ill stop back by Nissan on the way home to get even two more regular standard lugs.. which the first two they removed from a 370 in stock because they had no lugs in stock at all. ugh..

The 350 ones were a version of McGard, not sure what the 370 ones are.

MacDaddy 03-13-2011 04:25 PM

Gents refer your Nissan dealer to the TSB issued in August 2009 it is listed in the service TSB section on this forum. Print out a copy and put it in the service Managers hand and if necessary the GM's hand and tell them to fix it. It is ridiculous that these dealers are still putting the wrong wheel locks on the vehicles.

+1!!! Mine look like yours! where it's all rusted on the inside :/ not to mention, they had already broken one lug before I took the car home but didn't notice it missing until I started working on my wheels (I should've checked better ) So, 1 lock was missing, the other 3 broke as I was MANUALLY putting them back on... wtf?... I'm totally calling them out tomorrow... :shakes head:

Jme370 03-23-2011 08:41 AM

On my first 370, I had one lock break when I was putting on new tires. I called the sales manager that sold me the car and said you sold me the wrong wheel locks (they wouldn't include them in the deal). He basically told me to F off. A few months later I traded my 09 for a 10 ZR and did not go to the same dealership. Their loss. Needless to say I have the correct locks on my new Z!

ddanis60 03-24-2011 06:36 AM

Funny how their either too stupid or don't care enough to lose your business and possibly people you tell about this all over 100 or more bucks and a safety issue! So minor in the grand scheme of things to them to just pay attention and help out. But no. 10s of thousands of dollars lost.

BigCatZ 03-31-2011 06:54 PM

Hey all, Today i got the exact same problem.. Picture on the first page looks identical to what happened to me. i have the 19" sport rims(brand new 370z got 100kms on it!!). It is also the rear passenger wheel. Sounds like it can be fixed even though the stud is gone:icon14:
E-mailed my dealer, waiting for a response, sadly though where i bought the car i'm about 18 hours away.. and the next closest nissan dealership is 8 hours away

If the stud broke off that is an easy fix, they just bang it out and install a new stud. Sad that the dealerships are still installing the wrong locks! They are obviously not reading the TSB's. If you don't get immediate satisfaction call Nissan directly.

i dont have wheel locks on my car, but i have a question that's kind of related. the lug nuts for our cars are 21 or 22mm? it's weird, but on my car, when using a 21mm socket, it seems too tight (almost doesnt even fit), but 22mm is too loose. i had a shop work on my car a while ago, and i'm thinking maybe they put on the wrong nuts?? i dont remember having this problem before and i used to have to remove and tighten the nuts all the time when changing my pads before and after track days. i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 21mm. someone correct me if i'm wrong. thanks.

kenchan 04-12-2011 01:43 PM

21mm

BigCatZ 04-19-2011 08:22 PM

FML...So on my situation today the dealership told me to bring to a local tire shop to get it repaired. So i went in today only to watch the Easy-Out(13/16 remover) fail to grip on the broken locking lug but also scratched and chipped my rim... waiting to see what the dealer can do now... absolutely frustrated...checked with everyone in this town and nobody has a solution. Wish a dealership was close by...

Hope you get it all figured out man. Frustrating situation for sure

The Easy-out isn't going to work. Use a special lug remover socket, I found mine at Pep-boys. It has sharpened threaded teeth that will bite onto the smooth surface of the broken lug with the use of an impact wrench.

Here is a link to what I used.

Update: Went to a machine shop yesterday and he gave me a 19MM socket to grip the broken nut. We tested it on another locking lug nut and it grabbed and held on the tip amazingly hard(had to use a vice to separate them). Sure enough with little force and NO DAMAGE to the rim it grabbed and unscrewed it, no problem. Just goes to show if you want something done right... Do it yourself:tiphat:

I did the same thing when I had a similar issue years ago on my old camaro. Took a socket, smacked it on with an extension/hammer, and took the lug right off.

speedworks 05-07-2011 09:53 PM

Add me to the list. So frustrated, was in the middle of Swift springs install, and went to finish in the back, and one of them broke right off. Can seem to find any tools to get it off - been to all of the autoparts stores and sears. Supposedly Sears has a Lugout tool, but the one near me don't have them. So frustrated - attempted to drip the edges and try to get a grip, didn't work, and marked the wheel a little. Also, tomorrow, I plan to hammer a 19mm on it and see if that works. Unfortunately, the dealer I bought the car from, went out of business, so I see no help from Nissan....

speedworks 05-08-2011 04:33 PM

Ended up getting it off with a broke 19mm socket. Got lucky, but still put a few marks on a perfect wheel - makes me mad thinking about it.
