Track Tire "Offseason" Storage

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting a set of rims and tires dedicated to the track. Anybody have some good articles or best practices on how to store the rims and tires while not in use? I will probably use the tires 4-5 times a year, Dec-May.

Thinking of getting a set of street tires for the track. Not quite ready for slicks. probably PSS, RE-11 or something similar.

I run RE-11s for non track use and I bought a square set of Enkie NT03s 18 x 10.5 and wrapped them in r888 for track. Not sure if they will be worth storing after 7 to 10 track days lol!

Store in the dark (eg: wrap in black plastic or dark cloth ) and do not allow temps to drop below freezing nor exceed ~25-30 deg C

Buy cheap scrubs, use them for a season, and get another set for the next.

Is there actually an off season in Southern California?

LOL, It is way to hot to run June, July and August!

LOL! I consider there to be a season. When the summer ambient temps get to about 100+ degrees and track asphalt temps are even hotter, you really think twice about putting your car through that environment. I'd say Dec-May stays around 60-80 which is perfect!

Do you keep the tire on the rim inflated? How long is too long to store a tire? I went on tire rack and they have some suggestions. What else do you do besides putting the covers over them?

My fear is I will somehow store them improperly then when I get to the track my tires will blow or disintegrate...

During the offseason (~Nov.-Apr. here) I bring my race tires inside and store them in my spare bedroom or an empty closet. In either case the tires stay out of the cold and generally don't see much if any light. I use the covers like in the previous post to keep any brake dust, etc. off the floor.

Some fellow racers in my area who also happen to work as engineers for a major tire manufacturer just keep their extra/spare race tires in their basements in a dark room where the temperature is "mild" (~60-70°F). If that's good enough for them then it should work for you.

I plan on getting a wall mounted tire rack. I don't think it should really matter that much as they won't be sitting for more than three months at a time and there is no weight on them. I think the biggest thing is to keep them out of direct sunlight and temperature should not be a problem in our neck of the woods!

Great info! Do you deflate the tires or keep that at the same PSI they were on the car when you took them off?

Agreed! Do you store them deflated or at the same PSI they were when you took them off the car?

I keep air in them. My logic is if you deflate them they expand, contract more and you will probably lose your bead. Also you never deflate a spare tire and they go for ever before they are used.

I have 4 wall mounted racks. Some tires have air in them, some don't. I feel if you deflate them they'll unbead

Try to keep them cool and out of light. Shelf/total life on a tire is 5 years +/-

Mine generally end up about 5 psi under what I normally run them at for racing.
