Default upRev questions

Ok, I'm looking to do an upRev but want to ask you guys a couple of questions.

1. What do you get with an upRev tune? Do you get a cable? software? or just the tune with up to 5 profiles?

2. What happens if the shop where you got the upRev goes out of business? Can another shop access your tune? Can you get a copy of the tune loaded to a thumb drive for future use?

*disclaimer* yes, I did do a search. If these questions have been answered before I apologize, would you mind pointing me to the right thread. Thank-you.

You switch maps using the cruise control buttons. Osiris come with a cable and software UpRev - Engine Management

2. What happens if the shop where you got the upRev goes out of business? Can another shop access your tune? Can you get a copy of the tune loaded to a thumb drive for future use?

I'm pretty sure there are ways to save a particular tune for future use. With Osiris, the vehicle interface will link itself to the first ECU it flashes and will then only flash that ECU.

Mike, I understand how you change your profiles... just wondering from a customer standpoint, when you get an upRev what do you walk away with from the tuner/shop?

From what I gather, I put down my ~6-700 dollars for a "upRev Licence" and the car is tuned on a dyno (optimized) with a possibility of having 5 different profiles to choose from via the cruise control buttons. A customer is not getting software, or cables with the tune, correct?

Is Osiris recommended to purchase when getting a tune done?

There are 3 levels of Osiris licenses/cables

1. Osiris Flash Service - This is purely the license enabling your car can be flashed from a Pro Tuner. There is no cable, it uses the shop's cable (that can have multiple licenses on it) to flash yours. Up to 5 maps can be on the tune that's flashed, engaged by the cruise control as Cmike gave you good info on.

2. Osiris Standard Service - This comes with a cable and a license for the tune, and also unlocks Cipher for datalogging and trouble codes read/clear, etc. You can have a Pro Tuner do the tune and send you off with the cable (handy if you wanted to remove the tune at any time, dealer, etc.) - Or UpRev offers an e-flash service where you get a base tune, do some datalogs, and play back and forth with your cars info for tune tweaks. This kit also makes it super easy to remove the tune (reclaiming the UpRev license on the cable) and can be resold easily.

3. Osiris Tuner - Comes with a cable, a license, and still does Cipher datalogging and trouble codes, but also unlocks the tuning portion of Cipher, allowing you to get in there and do your own tuning. Has a lot of options (not quite what a pro tuner has), but can get you into trouble if you have no idea what you're doing. Fun if you want to bust out the laptop and nerd out on your car to learn tuning and what's going on inside the ECU. Can also be brought back to stock ROM and resold easily.

As far as your questions on a shop going out of business, any Pro Tuner can pull your tune off and back to stock, make any tweaks and reload the tune. You're not SOL if a shop is no longer around, but if you have the flash service, you don't have a way to get the tune off, you'd have to find another pro tuner.

Regarding the tune itself, yes it is just a file, an .OsirisROM file that can be loaded on a thumb drive, emailed, whatever you want. Figure it's 1.5-2.0MB

If you take your car to a tuner to get it tuned do you have to buy the license for your car prior to going in to do the actual tune? or does the shop own the license and can uprev tune any customer's vehicle?

Basically you take your car to the shop, have it tuned on the dyno, pay $600 and leave with an UpRev license for your car. You also have the option to have it re-tuned at a lower price since you already have the license should you install a new bolt-on on the car for example.

So you would have to pay a little extra to get the cable and access to Cipher, correct? What if you just buy a used uprev cable from someone?

$200 for the cable which also has a Cipher license.

Yes, you can purchase a used cable from someone, they are not married by VIN. You can also use the UpRev cable to trouble code check anything OBD-II (any newer vehicle).. as much as you want.

Ok, this is excellent info thanks CMike and Josh!

One last question, I'm assuming from the above information that the cable can be purchased anytime after the tune. Is that right?

I don't think we've sold a cable with Cipher outright.. So the $200 may not be accurate, but the difference in license fees between the flash service and standard service is $200, hence my quote.

EDIT: Just verified via UpRev's site, yes the cable/Cipher is $200, can be purchased separately.

Pro Tuners have special cables you can't purchase (only authorized shops), which have the ability to load/store more than just one UpRev license. They purchase the licenses in bulk, load them onto the cable and use them as needed. No reason to purchase the UpRev before you go to them, they can provide the license.

The cables that handle the standard and tuner are the same physically, it's a 'smart' cable that knows what type it is. You should call ahead to the tuner and let them know if you're looking for a standard or tuner version, so they can have it there for you. They may not stock them (we do, and they very well may.. but it's an inventory item like anything.)

If your car is getting hot, you should be looking into better cooling options, such as a large oil cooler, or perhaps an upgraded radiator if you're seeing high water temps.

STILLEN : STILLEN Oil Cooler Kit

With your setup, the ECU should be adequately able to control your A/F ratio. Tuning will always help with maximum HP and dial in your A/F, but you're not pushing it as if you're running a cold air intake, cat-back exhaust, HFCs or TPs and headers..

Thanks, I already have Stillen transmission cooler for about 6 months, and it helped a bit - I don't go to the limp mode with the engine cut-off, but still can achieve "pre-limp" mode with power being cut off...

I beleive I'll give this oil cooler a try at spring (I don't need it now, we have REALLY cold winter here).

By the way, is it safe to use transmission cooler at cold winter? Or is it better to disconnect the lines from it until the spring?

The same question about the oil cooler, though it has thermostat, so it shouldn't be any issues about the really cold weather (about -30 degree celsium), should it?
