Had the same concern when I first started but after the first event I never worried about it again. The key is to walk the course. In the 2 years I've been autox'ing now, I've only ever seen one car blatantly go the wrong way. Also I know in my region, the more experienced competitors are more than happy to ride along and help most of the time too.

I agree, I also recently started to draw out the course on a piece of paper when im walking it to help me navigate it. One of the biggest things to remember while driving is looking a few seconds ahead instead of right in front of the car. This helps you to not get cone vision.

Yeah they teach you that at HPDE events to look far ahead ...I guess it's the perspective in videos shot watching a car go through a course as a spectator would see it ...

I read somewhere else that finding a spot on your hood that would equal right and left NOT smacking a cone and kind of aim using those marks.

You can practice that using the raised reflectors on the highway. Ease over until your wheel starts hitting it and you can then mark your spot on the hood/wiper/whatever spot you want.
