Default Race Track Questions

I just had a few questions about going to the track with your car, Ive been trying to research on it but i cannot either get the answers or they aren't very clear. I am not trying to become a professional race car driver just had general curiosity questions?

1) Do I need any type of racing license to be able to go to any race track, but more specifically Road America (if they even let the public on).
2) What are the different types of racing licenses you can get for racing cars (URL?)
3) Can anyone get an F1 license and maybe rent an F1 car if they pass the required tests and acquire their license? (I know it will be very expensive, just something I would want to do at least once in my life).
4) Can anyone enter races like the Le Mans 24 hour race considering they have thee right car for it just not the sponsorship or is it invitation only? (Just curious, not actually planning to do this).
5) Assuming that they let the public on the Road America track what days can you go there because on their schedule it only specifies the big race dates.
6) A link to some kind of rule book that shows what mods are needed for different kinds of race classes.
7) Any other tracks around Illinois that you wouldn't have to pay 30k for a membership? (Could be neer by states).

For amateur/enthusiast track time, I'd begin by searching "HPDE" and "time attack" with perhaps the name of the city you live in. Each club organizing time attacks and/or each race track will have minimal basic requirements that you will need to follow. Tracking is fun. Good luck on your search and participation!

You should read this page here:
HPDE: High Performance Driving Event - National Auto Sport Association - nasaproracing.com

Also check out Chin Motorsports, if not to join, at least read the info on their site (especially the message board), TONS of info there.
Chin MotorSports - More Tracks, More Track Time!

The amount of events before you no longer need an instructor is completely based on your skill and comfort level. They decide when you are ready, and you decide after that if you want to go solo or not. It's also usually on a per-track basis. If you've done Road Atlanta 10+ times and you are cleared solo, that doesn't mean if you go to a new track you'll just be solo, you have to qualify again usually. There are exceptions to this though.

Oh, and it isn't "racing", all of the groups that do HPDE's are always sure to point this out, it's very important.

I noticed on NASA's site they list this:
Quote:
Body damage to cars very rarely occurs, however you are encouraged to check with your insurance company regarding coverage. Most insurance companies cover damages to your car during the school (HPDE) portion of the event. Be careful if they tell that it is not covered. Agents have been wrong before. Ask them for a list of "exclusions" in YOUR policy and consult an expert.
That was true, about 5-10 years ago, now, it's quite the opposite. I've only heard of one insurance agency that still does this (Liberty Mutual), and I have no proof of it myself.

Either way when you are doing the hpde 1 the instructors wont let you pass or do something stupid if I'm correct at least thats what I understand from reading on their site And i kind of understand that by taking my car to the track I could wreck it so i wouldn't complain if I actually did. Also for those who have been to one what exactly do you do with your Z to prepare for a race, I've read about what they suggest you do, just wondering your personal steps and routine. Btw thank you to all for the helpful info.

At least with Chin, they do allow passing, everything is using a "point-by" system, Novice you can only pass on approved straightaway's, the other levels are unrestricted. As for an instructor not letting you do "something stupid", that doesn't mean there won't be mistakes made. Hell, last time I was out, I saw one guy almost completely spin out right in front of me in Turn 17 @ Sebring, and another guy over shoot turn turn 7. An instructor can only do so much to help a person drive, so things will definitely still happen.

I think there have been many threads about making the Z track ready. The list is pretty short, so here you go:
1. Upgraded pads (I'm using Carbotech's).
2. Oil Cooler (It's a must, get a 34-row, can never have too much cooling)
3. Somewhat optional, Stainless Steel Brake Lines. I'd recommend it, easy job, and cheap. Much more reliable and more firm and predictable compared to the rubber lines you'd be replacing.

You should also do an oil change before an event, and most also require a inspection covering varying components before an event.

Here's an example of one:

So if i were to start out at NASA and get through the first two levels to where I would be able to participate without the instructor on the side, could I still go to a Chin event and not have to start out at the bottom again? I know that the Zs break overheat during racing so did those mods that you listed help with that problem? Also you said that they don't want to call it racing, why is that?

You'd be what they call "Provisional Solo". Where you'd have a Master Instructor ride along with you for part of a session, and if they feel like you have things down, you'll be given solo status. You don't pay for the instructor fee unless you aren't given solo status.

Oh, one other thing you should replace is your brake fluid, Motul RBF600 is good. Other than that, heat wise you should be good to go. The three things that commonly overheat (oil, brake fluid, and pads) are all replaced (or augmented) with more track oriented items.

It isn't racing, that's why they don't call it racing (and don't like it when people call it that). Times aren't being kept, neither are positions. If someone comes behind you and they are faster, you let them pass and lift off the accelerator a bit, no questions asked. If it's a car that is faster in the corners than the straightaways (like our Z) against another car, they will let you pass in a straight away, they'll just lift off the gas a bit more than normal. I had this happen a few times, passed a newer Corvette, and a Aston Martin, both cars I had no chance at taking in straight's, but due to their driving styles I had no issues with catching up to them in each corner, so they let me pass.

So basically in an HPDE the only thing you are competing against is yourself. Some people do keep times, but they are discrete about it.

Nope, decided to do the entire weekend at Sebring instead at the end of April. I was going to go to AMP, but it was cancelled since it's opening was delayed. Not sure if I'll be doing Road Atlanta this year or not, since I'm already planning on doing AMP in October, Miami later in the year, and Sebring at least once more. I'm going to try to hit up Road Atlanta early next year if not this year.

I would strongly disagree with that if you plan on driving on the street in the spring/fall in the northern states. Get a 19 row or 25 row if you are still primarily street driving.

I have had trouble getting up to temperature on 70F days on the street with my 25 row cooler. Aside from the track I almost always drive with a block out plate in front of the cooler.

Running with a cover should stop that from being a problem. He'll probably have to run with a cover in the winter, regardless of size anyway. Even on Florida "Cold" days (30-ish degrees F), it gets up to 180-200 just as quickly as stock did, with a cover on it.
