370z vs 335i Coupe
For anybody thats wondering about this, I just went against a 335i coupe and we were dead even 0-100. :ughdance: I talked to the guy afterwards and he had almost full bolt-ons, only missing test pipes (my z is bone stock, touring no sport package). for anybody thats wondering, I know I've looked around for this comparison and only found Z vs 135i. (This was on a closed course, not street racing)
Edit: I timed the 0-60 and it was 5.0 flat. I think this was a fairly good time for my car. didn't get 0-100 though. |
if he had almost full bolt ons he doesnt know how to drive im sorry.
Just an ECU tune will put down 340whp on those things. |

his was a 2007 model, so those nifty ECU tunes that add 80hp dont work on his car. idk why but my friend has one two and it messed with his transmission.
|
The 07 335i didn't have the oil cooler from the factory which I believe is required to do any ecu tuning.
|
sounds about right. Ecu tuning and boltons are different. I ran against plenty of stock 335s and i walked them pretty easy. I know tuned 335s will eat us alive, but bolt ons should bring it to about even.
|
... bolt ons? are you mad? $ per mod the 335 will rape you just like the evo would... until you spend enough on your Z to justify FI... then you have a whole different ballgame...
|
ive done some pulls with a tune only 335i coupe (it was very quiet) and it pulled on me. not hard, but it was clear it was the faster car.

Bmw added or replaced an oil cooler on the n54 engine after 2007. But either way, they tend to overheat in stock form let alone if youre trying to tune it to its full potential. Thats what.

Well I'll find out for myself soon enough. My boss has an 07 335xi and had some ecu tuning done while he was on his honeymoon. He was nervous about cooling and fuel pump issues.

Those cars are so unreliable...

My Z is kind of unreliable... What do you mean by that?

I love 335s. I always wonder if I would of been happier in a chipped 335, but I love my Z and my girl has a 325xi so I get the comfort fix when I drive her car...
But no lie, driving her 325xi def makes me wonder how sweet a 335 would be.. very confortable enjoyable ride. I drive is awesome stereo is fantastic, and even her 325 handles and feels great at alll speeds.. they are both top of the line tuner cars , love em both, nice runs... |

I haven't experienced overheating either, as I don't track the car, but it's been pretty well documented that the 370 needs an oil cooler for serious track. That does not include short 1/4 mile runs that really won't do much since there is so much cool down time between runs.
I doubt that the overheating issues of the 335i are much different than the 370z. |
my friend bought a tune for his car, and had to take it off because his 335i was overheating much easier. its not that it over heats stock, its just that bmw doesnt expect you to put 15 psi into the turbos without oil cooler

Secondaly I've never had issues with the car overheating on either car *I'll swap my JB3 over to wifey's car when I don't feel like shifthing*. When running it hard oil temps will get to 250 but that is normal. Now what I do experience is heatsoak which hurts power output due to the smallish intercooler. Some people do run aftermarket OC's but they still experience high oil temps when doing track events *not drag racing*. |
I went to Car & Coffee in Irvine with my friend and next door neighbor who has a 335i 6mt putting down 410whp. He has a full Brembo GT BBK, custom tuned, front mount intercooler, intakes, full 3" catless exhaust, and coilovers. I was really surprised that my Z with just Stillen sway bars and some exhaust work was able to keep up in the turns because his tail was getting happy while I was just tracking perfectly through the turns matching his speed. On the straights, he annihilated me but no as bad as I initially would have thought.
The big weight is the achilles heel of those cars, but there is no denying how well rounded they are. http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/u...C_0004_893.jpg |
a 335 really puts down 340whp with an ecu tune?
|
Yeah, if they were modded then you didn't stand a chance. I know of a few guys pushing close to 350 on stock turbos. I raced and beat a slightly modded one when I had full boltons and was making 310whp. Not by too much though...they are quick cars when modified.

My friend has a 2007 335i and jb3 in it. It's a piggyback tune thats capable of adding around 80hp/80tq . There are several maps that you can switch between, the higher ones can only be used if you have accompanying mods but the lower ones are accessible even if the chip is the only thing you have. It's still quite capable as a stand alone mod though.
Problem is, like someone else said, the cars dont come with an oil cooler (at least his didn't). Bursts at WOT are fine but the car heats up really fast and if he runs the car hard for an extended amount of time, the car goes into limp mode. |
Regardless of its whp, its still a boring-*** looking BMW.

A friend of mine has a 335i and he likes guys. Not sure how that applies. Just sayin'.

ran against friends 335 (which used to be mine) with jucebox 3 on map 3 and exhaust and it was dead even 40-120 but i did edge out after 110 or so. I was pretty surprised from the results. We did it twice just to make sure and same exact result.
Keep in mind this was ~600-700 above see level. Anything at higher altitude he would edge me out because NA loses power from higher elevation and turbo cars dont. Not sure if nismo had anything to do with the result or not.... |

Jeez this topic has been discussed ad nauseum already. I'll add my two cents. I've run 4 of these cars, 2 times being at 2am on the highway for a good 10-15 miles. They are unimpressive and have durability issues, one guy was burning oil after driving hard for a good 12 minutes on the highway at the cost of still being unable to catch me.
They are BMW muscle cars and are overrated especially by those who run them. I haven't met one that has got me yet and I'm pretty confident that when it happens it'll be because he spent 3x what I've spent. |

My dad has a 328. I think its a beautiful car. not the fastest thing in the world by any means. but i do have respect for all cars. Ive driven a lot of really fast and exspensive cars. Benz C63 AMG Black series(full exhaust, headers and a tune, ~580hp not wheel), Benz C63 AMG (exhaust and tuned ~480hp), 911 turbo tuned, M3's, Lambo LP560 (just exhaust). just to name a few. lol yes most are over priced i totally agree but there is no other feeling like siting behind the wheel of a lambo or a redic benz or any other redic car. and the build quality is by far better than any chevy, ford etc. |
