Track Day Chat

I figured I'd make this thread for conversations about track day experiences, expectation, and/or questions.

Let the games begin! :happydance:

I'll start and get the ball rolling.

Anyone going to Gridlife Midwest Festival in Michigan next weekend? I'm extremely excited to get the car out there with some of the best.

I'm hoping to get my oil pan in from CJM before the event. I Picked up some GLoc pads for the event too. I'll have my gopro strapped to record some times. My best at Gingerman raceway was 1:49:xx (first time on the track).

Below are some pics from my previous encounter at Gingerman:

Some of my friends from work are going (Subaru guys). I really want to go, but I haven't put on my sport brakes yet (or went to any other HPDE event before)

you should go regardless to experience the event. It's amazing. PS, my EBC red-stuff melted so quick after 3-4 runs on the track, deff get some track pads before going out!

I need "track" calipers first lol

I'll be corner balancing my car this week to see where it's at. I plan on putting in a half cage over the winter with some lighter bucket seats but curious as to where I'm at right now. Will post results later this week!

From looking at your pic's. You need some supports in the center of your splitter before you lose it.

It’s actually the material. It’s ABS plastic, found out it flexes way too much and my center support bar broke off lol. I’m switching to alumalite this week.

Jmatchley86 05-20-2019 07:33 PM

Anyone do SCCA Track Night in America? If you have a local track good chance its on the list. Monthly track afternoon ( 4 sessions ) for a reasonable price. I lucked out in life and have 3 (one is a 2 in 1 with multiple ways) of em within 30 min and a 4th being built!!!

DFW!!! TX!!!

I'm still dealing with a heat issue. I'm 99% sure it's an airflow issue so now I have to decide how to fix that. Do I cut or replace the hood?

To be completely honest, I don't think the OEM hood is that much heavier than my aftermarket CF one. I got into an accident and ended up just buying a new CF vented hood because A. it looks cool, B. had functional vents and C. it's somewhat lighter. I think I paid somewhere around 750 for my hood brand new.

Regarding your cooling issue, what are the symptoms? Do you have an aftermarket radiator or OEM? What are your temps at?

A friend and I did a few TNiA last year at PittRace near Pittsburgh, PA. It was a lot of fun and taught me that the car in its mostly stock form has way more capabilities than I do. Don't know yet whether or not I'll be doing any this year...

osbornsm 05-21-2019 09:50 AM

Oil discussion not allowed.
Brake fluid = Castrol SRF

Now that we have THAT out of the way... we can continue.

NA, Stock Radiator Water&Waterwetter, 34 Row Setrab, CJM Oil Pan, Mocal Thermostatic Plate, CZ Power Steering Cooler. Air Temp Avg 70F, Peak ECT~240F, Peak Oil~270F stock gauge, takes about 10-12min to get there. I've eliminated everything else that could be causing issues besides airflow. Like you said the CF ones look better IMO but I don't think it will justify the added cost.

I have a question about your cars classification in gridlife? With those fenders are you considered street, or street - mod?

Elmo370z 05-30-2019 01:47 PM

Mmm track days...

Jmatchley86 05-30-2019 07:42 PM

Double header for me next week!! TNiA at Cresson 1.7 ccw and then a weekend with The Drivers Edge on the same track but CW!! Anyone in DFW area going?

RN SHARK 05-30-2019 09:22 PM

I just did Hyperfest with NASA at VIR and doing a TNiA at Charlotte roval June 6th, mainly because it is hard to get on that track. Anyone else going?

osbornsm 05-31-2019 08:57 AM

My last track day was photographed by a guy who does portrait photography.

1/2 the shots were blurry, the other half unimpressive angles

Meh, just nice to see the burgundy beast movin

:ugh2:

Elmo370z 05-31-2019 09:51 AM

I’ll be boosted next year, I’m interested in how it will hold up with the custom Ron Davis radiators. Hope I can keep all temps in check. Oem suspension will Be tested.

Just finished my weekend at Gingerman raceway out here in Michigan. Man, what an event! Probably one of the greatest track events in the US in my opinion. Time attack, drift, car show, vendors, VR Racing, camping, and a music festival all in one event!

I managed to bring my time down 6 seconds from my first hot lap. I'm running some really shitty tires ($400 achilles) to get my feet wet. I'll be upgrading my tires for my next race event. All in all, it was a great experience.

I've got a few vids on my instagram and a ton more coming. I haven't posted any on youtube yet. For those of you that have instagram, check out my vids at @z34_motorsport.

just saw this. This would be considered street class. Rules state "needs to be OEM material." My fenders are modified OEM fenders.

also - need some suggestions.

I'm stuck between two sets of tires. NEXEN SUR4G 275/40/18 and Federal RS-RR 265/40/18

both are about the same price. The nexens aren't offered in 275. I'm currently running 275 and contemplating bumping down to 265. I've got a buddy who swears by his nexen tires. Anyone try the Federals?

How does one get stuck with two no-name tire brands? Class restriction?

I’d love to hear how those two brands are considered “no-name.”

The only reason I know of those two brands and tire models are through Motorsport & recommendations from fellow track rats. I’m not going to go out and spend $1500 on tires if I’m only doing HPDE events at this time.

Because they are cheap and no one who takes track tires seriously would consider them. I'd certainly never put either one of those brands on my Z. I have heard of people using both though. To each their own.

You don’t need sport calipers for your first DE. Just bleed the brake lines and put in high temp fluid and track compound pads like Carbotechs.

Both brands were recommended to me by time attack competitors....LOL. Do you compete or are you just blowing smoke out your pooper?

I haven't heard much about the Federals but the Nexens have been highly rated by some of the locals here and by a few of the Gridlife competitors I've been able to speak with. I plan on trying them out later this year.

JARblue 06-04-2019 08:26 PM

I never said anything about their performance. I'm sure they're perfectly capable.

Hotrodz 06-05-2019 08:18 AM

Out west a lot of guys run Nexen and they are loved by the drift community. Eagle runs them and he is fire! Federals are also popular as a dual purpose street and track tire. You aren't gonna break in records on them as they are second or two slower than the fastest tires. The Federals are cheap and good starter or practice tire. Lots of different tires and tire compounds out there to choose from. Since there are so many different track day organizations out west there is lots of information and people running different. You will no if a tire is garbage because the word spreads like wildfire. Don't just think because you haven't heard of a brand or they are cheap does not mean they will not perform.

JARblue 06-05-2019 08:56 AM

I know manufacturer defect is not one of the most common causes of tire failures. But I've seen enough cheap (i.e. inexpensive) tire defects, such as tread separation, that it's not worth the risk to use lower quality materials just to save a few pennies. It's why I stopped using Nittos, frankly. Just my :twocents: though. Not trying to start shìt...

I am not discounting what you are saying at all. Nexen and Federal have been proven on the track. It is well documented the issues Nitto had early on and they have long since fixed all the issues they had back in the day. Their NT 01 is still the bench mark for street legal track tire. They still put down the fastest times and ware better than 95% off track tires used. They are expensive so people are always looking for something cheaper and faster.

There are a lot of good tires from lesser known manufactures being used down under, in Asia and Europe that are slowly making there way to the US. Quality control is constantly getting better all over the world.

RN SHARK 06-05-2019 10:18 AM

I run NT01’s, but thinking of switching and going the used racing slicks route. Lots of Continentals and Pirelli slicks from race teams for sale. A lot of M3 guys use them. Anyone here do this?

LOL, I run NT01 as well and I have a track mate in Las Vegas that just got the hook up on used Pirelli slicks at killer price. He loved them. Unfortunately, my car is out of service and he blew his head gasket in his 350 back in March.
