Here's my video guys:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uc9oeNDXtM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=https://youtu.be/5Uc9oeNDXtM

Things I've noticed: I'm braking too early, trail braking too late, causing me to lose speed coming out of the turns (mainly because I'm worred of spinning out due to lack of grip on my crappy tires). I've also noticed I don't go wide enough on some turns and turn in a little too early on others.

A buddy of mine who competes in time attack reviewed the footage also mentioned that my shifts need to be smoother so I'm not chirping each gear lol

osbornsm 06-05-2019 01:48 PM

Video no worky :icon14:

Also SMOOTH inputs, even gas and brake :-)

Weird. Not sure why it's not working. Added a link in my previous post.

O
Great driving, track looked like a ton of fun. I noticed throughout the video where you downshifted when you should of stayed in the higher gear.

madwi 06-06-2019 06:52 AM

I believe that is Gingerman.

When using the [YOUTUBE] tag, leave off the youtube url. You just need the last part: the video number after the v= part. If you quote Rusty's post, you can see how he did it with only "5Uc9oeNDXtM" inside the tag.

Correct, gridlife was just there... WAY too many people for a track day. EEK!

PharmDZ 06-06-2019 09:11 AM

I just used my Nexen SUR4G setup on track for the first time and I was very impressed. 87 degree day, 25 min sessions, didn't grease up. I've run NT01, R888 and R888R, and RE71R before as well. The Nexens were cheap but gripped very well. The one thing I noticed is they allow for more slip than I'm used to but break away very gradually and it's SUPER easy to control which gave me a hell of a lot more confidence. Ran them for autocross as well and had one of my best days in years. I still like/prefer my R888R for ultimate grip on track, but as for a MUCH cheaper alternative without sacrificing all that much for grip, I'm sold.

Jmatchley86 06-06-2019 09:53 AM

I'm thinking of doing SUR4 next. Had TNiA last tuesday and i'm really tired of being on the cheaper end of summer sports. and for around the $750 mark they seem to be a good bet.

Do you daily those tires at all?

I no longer daily my Z, but they seem like they'd handle rain well and drive just fine every day.

I'm stuck between two sets of tires. NEXEN SUR4G 275/40/18 and Federal RS-RR 265/40/18

both are about the same price. The nexens aren't offered in 275. I'm currently running 275 and contemplating bumping down to 265. I've got a buddy who swears by his nexen tires. Anyone try the Federals?

I've run the Federal RS-RR in that size. They run wide for a 265.

My experience is that they are:

1. Loud. They sound like a mudder, with a frequency that isn't easily tuned out with more noise.

2. They hook well almost immediately. Your out lap can be your warm-up lap, and they're ready for times the next lap. I'd say they are comparable to a Hankook RS4+ in terms of grip.

3. They are pretty uncommunicative. They grip well but they're a bit sloppy and don't squeal at the limit. Either that, or they've deafened you so you can't hear it. The extremely stiff sidewall means you can get quite good turn-in and responsiveness, but again, it's sloppy and you're guessing at your slip angles.

4. Longevity and road manners are okay. I would say pretty typical of a "200" treadwear tire, and I drove them from Los Angeles to Thunderhill during the winter so it's... bearable.

5. They are scary in the wet. The tread is pretty much entirely useless, BUT FLAMES YO.

Since we have beat tires to death and sure that horse won't stay dead, I have another topic for discussion. We were having a down load session and a statement was made that most fast times come in the first couple of sessions in the morning when the weather is best, not to hot and the driver is fresh. I generally would agree but my experience this year has not been so. I have run my fastest laps in the next to the last and mostly the last session of the day.

My best times come in the middle sessions. First session, I getting up to speed and feeling everything out. Middle sessions, I feel great, comfortable, and focus. This is where everything for me starts to slow down. Last session. This is where I start to screw around. Seeing how far I can hang the rear out, and trying to get that great drive out of the corner. I've looped a time or two doing this. :shakes head: Trying slightly different lines.

For me I tell myself on the last session to just 85 to 90% and slow down bring the car home in on piece and just hit all you marks. I think it just what experience but it happens later for me. Everything slows down including me and I go faster, sometimes a couple of seconds faster. I got to find away to get into the zone sooner.

When you get into that zone where is seems like things slow down. You know you are cooking. :driving:

Exactly, it all about vision for me. It seems my eyes just go where they need to and my steering and baking inputs follow.

That is the quest for everyone. It comes with more seat time I guess. On the dragon I am slow on the way down. Just waking up I guess. On the way back, I am usually cooking with grease. I have to make myself slow down a little so I don't get too carried away.

:iagree:Seat and track time coupled with track familiarity is always the deal! Getting into the right mental state for me is like I said vision and relaxation. If I can rid myself of tension I am able to see and focus. It is the the same thing with hitting a baseball or a golf ball. I was an excellent curve ball hitter because I could see the dot the seams would make on the rotation of a curve ball and being relaxed help me with making adjustment to wait and hit it.

Downhill runs are always scarier than uphill runs because of simple physics and car dynamics. There is a reason that closed road time trial are called "Hill Climbs" because going uphill is significantly safer and and faster. That is if you stay on the asphalt!:driving:

Is that gear lever smiling :rofl2:

I think you need to stay in third gear most of the time, it will help you get on the throttle early and smoothly. Try to go for late apexes, I think it is faster with our cars, it will allow you to get on the throttle earlier, maybe a little slower mid turn, but much higher exit speed.

:iagree:

Familiarity to the track is something that makes you fast in any car. Driving in one circuit only for more than three years, made me getting to 80% or more of any car performance easily within few laps. BUT you reach a point where you get bored with the track, I want to try other tracks so badly to test my skills, but cannot.

Jmatchley86 06-10-2019 06:20 AM

Just finished a great weekend with The Drivers Edge in Cresson TX at MSR Cresson. Moved from the blue run group into blue solos and was told that I should be able to get a check ride next event into yellow!!

Had some great video, including an decent off road excursion, but sadly i stored it on the wrong portion of my phone so it can't be exported??? oh well.

Also learned that i badly need brake cooling ducts!

This was my fastest lap from me at Thunderhill yesterday. They said it was the 5 mile layout but harry's lap timer had it listed as 4.8miles. Couldn't get the telemetry to be 100% synced with video, but I'll figure it out in due time. First track event with my Z (had raced Lemons in an old 93 300zx on this track) and had a blast. Was only in A group(novice) , but got the OK to go B group (intermediate) next time out, the only one close to me in A group was a C7 Z06, and it wasn't even that close.

Jmatchley86 06-10-2019 06:02 PM

I love this layout of T-hill, it's almost like 2 separate tracks because you have the faster east side and the more technical, tighter west side of the track. If anybody has any tips/advice, I'm all ears. Was able to drop from 3:40 to 3:38 just having the instructor with me on 1 session, and then was on pace for a 3:35 before I experienced some bad fuel starvation at 3/4 tank (forgot to refuel prior to session) and then got down to that 3:32.03 in my last session. I definitely know there's more time to be gained for sure with more seat time.

Elmo370z 06-11-2019 12:31 AM

That’s a long *** track

bpchaos 06-11-2019 01:01 PM

I still haven't done T-Hill 5 mile. Just the East course (3 mile?). Still great fun, and still the only track I've been on where I've spun my car.

Elmo370z 06-11-2019 03:30 PM

5 mile course, holy cow crap. I want to do that

Half way through. You have to stop and take a lunch break. :yum:

Hotrodz 06-11-2019 06:16 PM

Three miles is long track lol! Heck I spin out at least once a track day LMAO! Luckily most track I have been to have lots of run off.

I'm the exact same. Even on day 2 of a weekend event my last sessions are faster. I would think the first runs on day 2 would be your best but for me they aren't.

Jmatchley86 06-13-2019 06:57 PM

If anyone is in DFW or TX TheDriversEdge.net is two weekends at MSRCresson on the 3.1 track! Its a great track!! And this group is very educational so i always get better by the end.

Its in Oct and Nov, not on the schedule yet but the coordinator attached it in the last email.

ltullos 06-15-2019 07:06 PM

Edge Addicts also runs a monthly Monday MSRC 3.1 event which I’ll be at Jun 17. These events give more track time than you can stand with 5 30 min sessions and the ability to run in higher or lower run group in the afternoon sessions. Seriously, you can get 3.5-4 hrs of time if you want.

Limited coaching is available but fills up quickly and honestly is not as good as Drivers Edge. They are well done events though and VERY reasonably priced.

Its the Monday that kills it for me. Hard for me to get away from the office on that day. Hopefully in the future i'll have some minions but for now the best I can do is SCCA TNiA in the afternoons. And i totally agree that is a hell of a deal for the money!

Anyone planning on coming to GridLife Round 5 in South Haven Michigan?

slongholio 09-09-2019 04:44 PM

Lol, looking at this thread, I'm worried I'm going to ruin my car. Going to track night in America tomorrow. My car has the sport package and no mods. Is this thing going to disentigrate? Putting new brake pads on here in a few minutes -but they're the stock (sport) brakes. My first time so I'll be in the novice group, whatever that matters.
